A great car to begin an adventure into the classic car scene. Cheap to run, cheap to maintain, and as reliable as anything you'll buy today. It looks like it needs recomissioning, but Ford parts are cheap, and mostly available at a motor factors.
never really got the thing with fiestas but each to their own I guess. prefer the jap stuff.

Ahh yeah, that's fair enough. Not everyone likes every car. I'm no fan of Mk2 Escorts, in general. Some fetching 25 grand, I think is crazy, when a much superior BMW 325i, will fetch only half that, but that's what people prefer, that's fine by me. But in this case, If someone wanted to get into classic cars, this would be ideal.

I messaged him earlier and he got back to me to ring. Meant to. I will tomorrow if it's not gone. I like it. Money a bit high though.

A wee bit alright. But sure, have a look at it and see if he's willing to do a deal.

The velour on that 130 is one of the best interiors I've seen in a very long time. Simply gorgeous.

The BX was for sale for a long time for about €1500 6 years ago, was on the verge of buying it but had nowhere to park it. Thought the colour was lighter than that, must be the lighting. Lovely car all the same.

I see the Roll Royce is sold. Anyone here the new owners?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,322 ✭✭✭w124man

Is the LHD 130 a resto in the making at that price. I have never seen it but a really good one looks more like this one.

Gorgeous cars but you need to be very dedicated to own one. There used to be a blue on on the Rathgar Road around 1978 outside the old Sheane garage. It had a cool reg plate ZH9999 (I think)

which two would get the summer months?:)

Doesn't need to be a 4 month stretch, could be random months worked out so every one gets summer time, Spring time, Winter time, Autumn time ect.

No one wants to part own a car and drive the length of the country to have it for a few hours and then drop it back. That makes no sense.

Manual 130's were very rare, the vast majority being automatic. This might explain the price difference.

does anyone know what the switch in the centre console of the 130 with the trumpet looking thing on it is ?
I doubt its the actual horn, Italians simply would refuse to buy it with it not at their finger tips. Could it be to blow the horn continuously ?maybe for those times when you are too busy using one hand on the knee of the lady in the passenger seat and smoking a cigarette with the other, but being Italian, you must be using the horn at all times ?

Not the three of us anyway. I guess we left it too late (but the car had been for sale for a good few weeks, so it didn't feel there was a sense of urgency)

Won't be easy to find another one like that...

It's to switch between 'town' and 'country' horns, each having a different tone.

Ad says "one owner from new"

This is a plain lie, the car is down as a 2 owner car, which is easily checked. Also the car is down with cartell as a make: MERCEDES BENZ model: UNKNOWN. This is a tell tale sign that the car was imported. The 2 owners I mentioned above are 2 Irish based owners, so the car has had at least 3 owners

When I came across something like this, my first thought is: what else is the seller lying about?

Also the car is still on the normal motor tax system (EUR1494 per year). Needless to say, the car is untaxed. And none of you will be surprised that the car hasn't had an NCT in a decade. And mileage over 200k miles, the car can handle, but I'd put money on the car being very tired. Personally, I wouldn't even bother picking up the phone to ring the seller. Let alone waste my time going to see it.

That W126 is indeed a UK import, although it has spent more time on these shores than in England. Two owners, but to be honest you can forgive the seller that blunder, the logbook under section J.1 lists ‘no. of PREVIOUS owners’ so a 2 owner car will have had 1 previous owner, and ‘1’ will be listed on the logbook. Honestly, 90% of sellers (of classics and moderns) make this mistake.

I think the fact that it is still on cc tax is a good thing. Obviously it is the first thing I would be changing if I bought the car, but it’s a good indicator of the type of person the previous owner was. In this instance I’m guessing someone elderly has had that car for a very long, and they only sold it last September (the last date of sale).

For all we know they could have had it from new. Plenty of Irish went off to the UK and made successful lives and careers for themselves. Owner could well have retired back to Cork and brought his beloved Merc with him. In fact, I know an elderly Irish gent from Mayo who has resided in Kilburn in London since the mid 50s. He has been driving a 92 W126 S Class for the last 20-odd years and loves it. I’ve posted a few photos of it in this forum over the years.

I think calling the seller of the above car a liar is a massive overreaction.

For all we know they could have had it from new.

Possible in theory. The car might very well have been owned by one person in Ireland for some time and maybe the car has been off the road for a long time, that could explain the lack of tax and test 10 years out

The seller is a trader though (see the stickers on the cars in the yard), and the car has 2 owners in Ireland plus an owner in the UK. If it really was a one owner car (before he bought it), he should have given us a reason to believe him

If anyone rings the seller or goes to see this car, please report back here :)

This is very nice, looks to be totally original, decent price too. A couple of weekends giving it a detail with a few beers and it would be a lovely runner for the summer. The red plates, original radio (missing a button) and long ownership give me a bit of confidence in it.
