    Handsome machine

    Price is not too unrealistic. Long NCT and long tax

    A wee bit of haggling needed on the price but the fact it has the nct and is a td model makes it stand out from the other ones that have been on DD. Great cars for working on some amount of space in the engine bay! :cool: Also run on the veggie stuff with consummate ease so their popular with the mother earth brigade :D Anyone have first hand experience with them compared to the 300d/td models I have a feeling a man might regret not going for the 3.0, or is their really not that big of a difference?

    300 turbodiesel is far more desirable (wasn't that the worlds first turbo diesel car?), has a lot more power, is auto only iirc which is a good thing, but it would probably set you back a good bit more than that in good condition!

    Personally my pick of choice would be the 280TE auto (petrol)

    Do you mean 300TD or 300TD Turbo? I used to drive a 300TD and it is the only car I am very sorry I sold. Excellent machines.

    UNKEL, I agree, the 280 TE Auto are brilliant, but a bit juicy, had one until recently, got a 300 TED instead. Got lazy with the automatic, I don't particulary enjoy driving that 240D, but it is a great workhorse.

    A 300 TD was my first proper car many moons ago when I lived in Germany, I've had a good few W123's, mostly 200 but the odd 240. The only real issue with the 300 is that the fifth cylinder doesn't warm up well if the car is doing a lot of short runs but apart from that there's no real difference. 240 has 72PS, 300 has 88PS, and the 300 DT has 109 PS IIRC.

    That 240 looks a good buy, the metal was a better quality in 1984 than the earlier ones and they don't rust as much. It's also the rare but very desirable 5 speed (though I prefer the Auto).

    Rust checks are easy, jack it up and listen for any tell tale crunch, check the bottoms of the doors and boot and around the wheelarches. Also have a look at the metal strip between the headlights and bumper. Any rust in any of those spots means its contagious.

    Self levelling rear suspension should work, the car looks to be level, though the photos are a year old so it needs to be checked properly. Needs a good clean, but it would make a nice daily driver as a rolling resto.

    The 280 is very heavy on petrol if you have a heavy foot, 12-18 l/100 km are normal.

    W123 and W124 never came in RHD Turbo Diesel. That didn't happen until the W210. The 'T' in TD stands for Touring

    And the Turbodiesel was never offered with manual transmission except the 250D Turbo in W124.

    I think only the W123 300TD Turbodiesel never came in manual?

    No, same story in the W124 series. 3-litre Turbo only with automatic.

    You may well be right. Having driven both a 190 TD and a 300TDT, they were very old school turbo. Putting a manual box onto either engine would have been a bad idea as the power band is very narrow

    The 190 must have been the 2.5D Turbo. It was also available with manual box. However, I think the main reason they did not offer their 3-litre Turbo with a manual box is due to the torque of these engines. The manual boxes may not have been strong enough or not able to cover, say, half a million km without the need of rebuilt.
    And an auto box as you said suited it better.

    On that tangent the last time I was in the Canaries, I was in a W202 C-class 250 diesel with a manual box (I think it was 6 speed!) and just shy of 1 million km

    the 'T' stands for transporter not touring
    In Mercedes dictionary T stands for "Tourismus und Transport", which means Tourism and Transport.

    The designation for T-models is SXXX (i.e. S124), which stands for "Stationswagen" = Estate.

    'T' stands for Touring on Mercedes estates according to the Mercedes Benz W124 estate brochure that came with my Mercedes estate!

    'Transporter' is a VW registered name

    This is correct.

    The transporter designation comes from the fact that several Merc models before the W123 and W124 were converted into estates, ambulances and specialised bodies. These were mostly done by companies like Binz. Mercedes assisted them in that they gave unfinished cars to those factories to make the cars easier and cheaper to convert.

    The estate was also meant for business people who needed a comfortable, up market vehicle to transport merchandise (partly the reason they fitted the self levelling rear suspension) as well as for families who needed the space.

    The Stationswagen name is strange as nowhere in Germany are estates referred to as such, but it's something Mercedes usd to distinguish their estates internally. Estates in Germany are usually called Kombis (kombinationsfahrzeug).

    It's true that VW use the Transporter name, but BMW have been using the Touring designation longer, since the 1970's.

    Mercedes-Benz use “S” followed by three numbers to signify the estate variant of any given model (Touring Modell, Estate or Wagen, depending on country) and is code named S124 for example. This is the internal model coding.

    A = Cabriolet
    C = Coupé
    S = Estate
    V = Long wheelbase
    W = Sedan

    Model names, however, changed in 1994 and they no longer follow the old system so the 'T' has disappeared.

    Not really. The above example needs too much work and a new engine, so makes not much sense.

    Yep,

    Unfortunately all the best classics, need too much work:)
    Not saying this one is worth that investment:D

    This is a very rare car and has some rust like all old minis but is not rotten
    Maybe it's just me, but in my book, Mini + some rust = rotten. Icebergs so they are. Still, if you love welding they're great fun :P

    Not sure about the Mary Quant "Designer" edition interior. I always remember those cars as having "black eyes"
