Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Downtube shifters for racing

    How inapproriate is it nowadays.

I am looking at a bike which comes with downtube shifters. It's a little bit on the vintage side but its in good nick, reasonable light. I hadn't really been thinking about it but for future racing this year, it could be my racing bike for the short turn.

I was wondering are they allowed? are they frowned upon? do they pose any inherent danger or will its only downside be it makes me slower to adapt to a jump.

I certainly won't be up at the front but as it will be my only geared bike it would be my racer for the next few months.

Just let us know in advance the races you intend to do so that we can avoid the risk!

Didn't think you were racing on the road anyway nowadays so your fine :pac:

I have used DT shifters for years so I wouldn't be a danger to myself or anyone else AFAIK but they may not be allowed anymore, or they might just be frowned upon.

I was wondering was there some danger that I am not thinking of, does the reaching down action pose any risk in a bunch, or am i just being overly paranoid. I used them on plenty of crowded audaxes and events but just not at anything over 35kmph, although I would have been shoulder to shoulder in some cases due to the way some of them insist on riding.

It's just not you being able to adapt to a jump, but consider what will happen when you are in the breakaway, especially a big mountain breakaway - your competion will see you reach down to stick it in the big ring and will anticpate you making your big move for victory. Your ass will be covered big time and so that means be no champagne, flowers and podium girls for you.

as far as I am aware there is no technical UCI rule prohibiting DTS, but I could be wrong.

I have all of these waiting at home for me just for getting through the workday, don't need to win a bike race for them
