Again, can you not read? Now go drink your cans of Carling and keep quiet.Good lad.

I didn't think anyone who claimed to care about suicide would exhort someone to go drinking alcohol.

Exactly, he implied on the previous page that I had mental disabilities.

This guy is only on it for the skydive.

Well I would say it's more than the many many many charities we have here. Admin fancy CEO's and all that don't come cheep.

Raise 450, 200 goes to charity, probably 150 of that goes to admin etc, so aprox 50 makes it to be distributed among the people who need it. That's crap no matter how you look at it.

You need to give people something for their money. Your pleasure is not a return for them

Let me ask you something;Have you ever tried washing up without using washing-up liquid?

There's so many people raising money for various charities that jumping out of a plane, something people save up to do for fun, is going to just look like you're figuring out a way to get it for free.

I did a 130k charity walk/hike last summer and raised 3k. It's understandably bloody hard to get a few quid out of people these days but if you do want to raise something, people want what your doing to be a challenge and something that won't look like you're doing for fun.

Thanks Cardinal.Thats probably the most sensible response so far. How did you actually get that idea on legs?I mean was it an ongoing charity that started the idea or did you start it yourself from the ground up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭CardinalJ

Then the just raise money? Do a run or something free, when your going around asking for sponsorship the first 250 euro you raise won't go to the charity, no need to do something expensive for charity.

Yea this is your problem, what are you putting into it if the money you're raising is covering your costs?

True actually i suppose. These are the kind of responses i was looking for, that would actually give me an idea of where the funds go.thanks.

Me and a mate decided we were going to do something over a week, then were wondering how short a time we could do it in, then decided to do it over 2 days with minimal sleep.

We got onto radio, sports websites and a lot of coverage on social media and still didn't hit our target. Once you shake your mates and families down for a few quid it's harder to raise cash.

If you want to raise money for a charity that means something to you go for it, but you need to think about what you put into it yourself to convince people to give you cash.

Edit - We also got a few companies to sponsor us decent prizes that anyone who donated to us went into draws to win. Restaurant vouchers, TV sport subscriptions and a load of other stuff. Like I say, you need to give them something back.

Why. They are businesses. Free to make whatever commercial arrangements they choose.

I'm sure they are. I'm sure they would be even more grateful for the whole €450.

A word of advice Don't call people that you don't know, that you are trying to blag money from to further your hobbies names. They'll most likely tell you where to get off ya little pr1ck.

Haven't started it yet. Still working on video/photo etc. Few days. I'll PM you.
The charity I work most with is www.streetchildadvocate.com
I set up and designed their website for them (free of charge of course), but got really involved in the day to day work that Roen was doing.

Refer to post above.People pay to sponsor the jump. The money goes to charity.

Not all the money. More than half goes to a company who runs these jumps as a business. They are doing nothing wrong, except using well intentioned people to run their business for them.
If you really want to do something simple for your well deserving charity, hold a table quiz in your local pub. ALL the money you raise will go to the charity. The pub will usually sponsor the prize and do the questions. You can sell tickets for a raffle for prizes donated or that you supply yourself.

Whatever you decide to do, Good Luck and Well Done for thinking of others, but don't let yourself used to support a business as well as the charity.

Thank you very much Maryanne. The parachuting was a spur of the moment idea, but a couple of the sensible replies on this thread said pretty much the same thing you did, that it was more in the interests of the parachute club.

I dont even have any interest in parachuting to be honest but the idea of doing some charity work has been nagging at me for a while now and ill definitely do something.

A raffle is a good idea isnt it?An old way of doing things but reliable i would imagine.Any ideas on how to get a prize donated from somewhere anyone?

There are many low cost...and even free ways to help charities. Simply raising awareness of a cause/charity is extremely useful. You'd be surprised how just a few mentions on Facebook/Twitter etc can generate 1000's of views for charity website, with a few of them ending up with donations...perhaps even some reoccurring.

A table quiz, charity soccer event with local clubs, sports days for the local community with collection buckets, sponsored run/walk, sponsored dares etc all cost next to nothing with help from a few good hearted people.

Speak with local businesses about prizes. They might donate vouchers for use in their shops etc or provide prizes in exchange for advertisement at the event.

Hi OP,I did a charity jump years ago for the Irish Cancer Society.I paid for the jump myself and every penny I got sponsored went to the charity.I understand why you're getting negative responses here, while it's admirable that you want to raise money for a charity it's a tad much to ask people to donate money and use part of it to fund the jump.
The reason I chose the jump was that I have a really really strong fear of height and not a lover of flying but watching my Dad die of that horrible disease pushed me to push myself.I also worked in a pretty big factory at the time and my Dad was a popular man in our community so it was "relatively" easy to gather sponsorship. After all that, all I can say is either consider a cheaper way to raise money for the charity or attempt to save the money to cover your jump and let people know that every cent you get will go directly to the charity.Best of luck.😊

Thank you both for your replies.Sorry to hear about your Dad fallen01angel, im sorry you had to go through that.

And yes, a few reasoned posts got me thinking and im gone well off the idea of parachuting now.I saw a facebook post about it earlier and i just jumped at the idea tbh. But i will do something like depraved and others suggested.

No. If we allowed one person do it we'd have to allow everyone do it. Boards is a discussion site, not an easy medium for people to tap posters for a few quid.

People sponsor the jump and the money goes to charity.Thats what it has to do with charity.Pretty self explanatory really.

Less than 50% goes to charity.

I'd be curious to know how many of the people who responded to this thread have actually raised money for charity themselves?

OP tries to be a decent human being, has a fleeting idea on how to raise money, and then gets crucified for asking for advice on how to continue.
OK...so jumping out of a plane is a bad idea (is it ever a good idea???), but at least his heart is in the right place. Far too many people are just happier spending the weeknights in the pub and the weekends on the couch watching sports...ya know, before heading back to the pub.

Whatever method you go for, I salute you for caring enough and actually doing something. Well done mate. Wish we had more like you.

You don't need a permit for the church that was pointed out earlier.

You don't need a permit to collect money on the church grounds, BUT, most churches only allow such collections for upkeep of the Church. Collections OUTSIDE the Church, you DO need a GArda permit and you must stay well clear of the Church entrance. You also have to get permission of the Church, both as a courtesy and to avoid clashing with another collection.

Im interested in doing a parachute jump for charity.I looked it up on skydive4charity and it says the minimum to raise is 450euro with 200 going to the charity and 250 to pay for the jump itself.

Has anyone any experience raising funds like this? What are some methods to get funds, can i stand outside Dunnes with a sponsor card or do you need permission for something like that?

Also, does anyone know if you can get your own online charity pages to raise funds with this company? And if so, can i link to it here on boards?

I have no experience doing anything like this so any help or advice is appreciated, thanks.

Doing a jump for €250 is a waste of money for other people to donate.

Sign up for a mini marathon or hell and back or tough mudder.. Costs you like €50 then raise the rest for the charity of your choice.. You can do this via mychairity.ie etc or I'm sure console will have donation cards they can give you.

Doubt strangers will give u any money outside dunnes.. I wouldn't.

It will be down to your friends n family.. Co workers or neighbours etc.

I did hell and back two years ago.. I paid to enter myself.. Raised €1,700 for the Irish cancer society €1,500 through the my charity website and the balance through the donation card they sent me out.

    Best of luck

I did a skydive at 18 for a charity. We decided that 10 of us would do it because we could get a group discount. We all paid for our own jump, I think it was around €320 each with the discount at the time.
