Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Many of you may not have heard of the book, but it was a huge favourite of mine in my early teens. It's set in a small English town, where three school friends find themselves fighting an ancient warlord and his minions (the "leather men") with the help of a local white witch. It's very atmospheric, contrasting ancient legends and cultures with the urban world of modern teenagers. (Well, 1968 teenagers.)

I've long wondered why no-one's made it in to a film, but it's finally happening. Filming stars in October 2015, with a planned release date of Christmas 2016. The director is Michael Caton-Jones (This Boy's Life, Rob Roy, The Jackal). (There's an official website, with not much there yet.)

I'm no longer in the target audience, of course, and I can see it appealing to a Harry Potter fan demographic. What makes the book so much more than generic "young adult" fantasy is its sense of a deep Viking vs Anglo-Saxon legendary landscape, and I hope the film-makers don't water that down. Unlike the Harry Potter plot, where almost everything hinged on Harry and his relationship with Voldemort, The Giant Under The Snow invokes a Lovecraftian sense of dread at immense ancient forces that really don't care about you, and which you will never really understand. :eek:
