Ok , 17.5 BHP castlegarden mower , first go this year and won't start, turning at first but not firing, got a lad to look at it

Checked battery, solenoid, plugs, changed petrol, and still nothing, looks like engine struggling to turn,

He is baffled, anyone have any similar experiences

How did you check the battery?
I had a truck that took the charge showed full but would only turn over for a few sec before the battery start to die.
If you have a set of jump leads throw them on and try

    Tried a new battery

Don't think you can jump a lawnmower, fry the starter

I often jumped mine, no problems (jonsered /Kohler 15hp)
Do so at your own risk/disclaimer etc....

You can, if the voltages are the same their is no issue.
