Hi there, we are at the very beginning stages of building a house. It'll probably be around 2700 sq ft. Hoping for planning for 9ft walls downstairs and 8ft upstairs. We're wondering how many blocks we'd need. Any ideas??

Your QS will have this in his Bill of Quantities.

But if you want a rough idea, you may need to provide more info, dimensions, a plan etc

Since your new to building I'll give you one piece of advice dont worry about ground work, block or the roof because the cheapest part of building is getting the house to roof level its only after that when you'll truly realise what it's like to spend money

A 1m2 area of blockwork wall of standard 4" solid blocks on their edge would have 10Nr blocks allowing for a 10mm mortar joint

If you had some block walls on their flat to support say precast concrete floor slabs, the a 1m2 area of blockwork wall would have 20Nr blocks allowing for a 10mm mortar joint

So say a single leaf blockwork wall of say 10m long by 2.7m high would be 27m2 surface area, so that would be 27 x 10 = 270Nr 4" standard solid blocks on edge for that wall.

If your working out the external cavity walls then double up as there are two leafs of blockwork.

Get a scale ruler and measure the length of walls, multiply by the height and this will help work out the Nr of Blocks you need.

You could be talking anywhere between 10,000-15,000 blocks for a 2,700sq foot house

    Hope that helps
