ultegra components interchangeable?

A question for the more mechanically minded among you, I have an Ultegra groupset thats about 7 years old on my winter bike, I need to pick up a left hand shifter.Its a ultegra flight deck shifter,im looking around and there seems to be plenty of more modern ultegra shirters for sale on Ebay, done deal etc, will these shifters work with the original derailleurs etc that I have on the bike?.Basically will old and new ultegra components work together? .Thanks.

FD shifter should work fine, double -> double. Triple <-> double might be tricky.
RD shifter generally won't be compatible unless it covers the same number of rear gears.

So as long as the shifter and rear derailleur are bith 10 speed it should be ok?.

yes any 10 speed ultegra lever will work and for that matter any 105 , as long as you match shimano with shimano u will have no issues

I don't think that an Ultegra 6800 shifter will work properly with a 6700 FD and vice versa, my understanding is that the pull ratios have changed but 10 speed should be fine.
