    Hello wise men,

I would like to replace my 7 yrs old Inspiron 4GB, Athlon 5600, GS8600, Vista :) with something geared towards gaming/graphic design. I was looking at some Alienware models, but I thought that building one could be more cost-effective. It would be nice to have a PC that can last a few years, too.

    1. What is your budget? €1000 - 1200

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming/graphic design

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? No

5a. If yes, what size do you need. n/a

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? 1680 x 1050 and No

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

    8. How can you pay? Credit Card / transfer / PayPal

    9. When are you purchasing? In the next 2 weeks or so

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Dublin

So far I put together something like this (I know it's slightly over budget, but perhaps someone can advise on better choices than the ones below)

    Intel Core i5-4460 in-a-Box 184,99 €
    16GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance Low Profile schwarz PC3-12800U CL10-10-10-27 132,92 €
FRACTAL DESIGN Define R5 Black, ATX, ohne Netzteil 104,90 €
    Cooler Master VS-Series V750SM 750W ATX 2.31 108,11 €
    ASUS STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5, GeForce GTX 970, 4GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort 386,87 €
    WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's 58,29 €
    Samsung SSD 850 EVO SATA 6Gb/s 250 GB 111,99 €
    ASUS BC-12D2HT/BLK/G Retail Silent 61,64 €

    Total value: 1.179,70 €

I'm not sure about the motherboard, and if some of the components are too strong.

    Thanks

Can't post fully, but some quick stuff:

750W PSU is overkill, 450W would be fine for that unless you want to add a second GPU down the line.
The MSI 970 is a little quieter than the Strix (if that matters to you)
Don't get an 840 Evo. They have an unfixable bug that causes any data older than two weeks to become very slow to access. Look at a BX100 from Crucial instead.

Better cpu in there. But drop to the i5 if you wish, is not a problem. .

Can get windows key on reddit for 20 euro.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Pretty cool stuff in there. I know that my PSU was probably a bit too powerful for this build but I wanted to have some spare power in case of future expansion.

@Serephucus - Apparently 850EVO is no longer affected by it.

Will run it through gehizals.de to save a few quid :)

The ssd is good at a better price keep it.

It wasn't so much the psu overkill as price also. Can get a be quiet 7 700 w for around 80. This will cover sli 970.
