Just looking for some information on a career change into nursing. I have a degree and master level qualification from a NUI in another area and I am trying to get an idea of the options that are available to me to allow me to transfer into nursing, as a mature student. I am guessing that having a degree and masters means that I will have to pay full fees for a degree level qualification in nursing both here and in the UK. Is that correct or are there other paths that I can follow?

Finally, I have come across some one year certificates here in Ireland which give you a (NFQ level 5) qualification. If I complete such a qualification, will this be enough to get an entry level position into the industry and can I study up to degree level whilst working?

You cannot do a pre nursing course and then work as a nurse until qualified. You can work as a care assistant but they have to be fetac qualified. Some healthcare assistants can get sponsored for their training as nurses.
Its very competitive applying for nursing as a mature student.
Look up NMBI website "Nursing a career for you".
Its a 4 year degree course but afaik its shorter in UK/NI
Yes you would have to pay fees.
In Ireland you would be off for the usual college holidays but would have some placements in summer and spring. There are no nights and weekends so you could work to supplement your income.

Its a good career and we are welcome all around the world as health professionals.

Its a very hard job and stressful- there is so much more to it than giving out tablets and making beds. Before I went into it I asked myself if I could deal wit all the body fluids and dead bodies.... now I wish I knew about the legalities and documentation.
Also look up the salary of a newly qualified nurse- there have been huge cuts to new grads.
I went into nursing as a mature student, qualified in '08 and have since gone on to specialise in midwifery.
    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

Can someone clarify for me can I work in A&E straight away after graduating in general?
Are there better opportunities in U.K then Ireland at the moment?
