you widen the metal gangway on the lock and the bikes go across on the lock.
if the lock is open, they get to have a rest

Well, the lock is very rarely completely open, so they'd be able to cross one of the the two gates handy enough, but like, how do you get the track from the greenway to Burgess Park in the first place?

They closed the footpath beside Dunnes Montree as part of the works and the sign says closed until July.

Cycled under the 2 bridges near Corrib Oil/Coosan road yesterday. There was alot of heavy machinery active on the old road. They're definitely working away anyways. Good to see.

Irish Rail are suspending services this weekend for the Galway and Westport routes to facilitate works on the cycleway.

    and the end result...

For reference, here is a Google maps aerial view showing where that photo is, with Dunnes Montree at the bottom (North), and a flat roofed building in the Hospital grounds with a skylight dome at the top (South):

yes and that site with the shell of a house bordering the railway line and Abbey rd has been completely cleared for the project.

Not a house, an abattoir per the 1930s OSI 6" map.

Actually looking at it now, depending on the exact "near the marina" site of the new bridge, there'l be very little interaction with traffic there. Maybe 100m or so?

I think the Greenway will run through the hospital grounds, and just cross the road to the marina - way less than 100m

As every bridge in the world is. Needs to be lit the whole way as the last extension was due to proximity of nacks.

It's not just in an incredibly stupid location, it's ugly as sin.

That's more a poor reflection on Athlone rather than the idea or design of the Cycle way.

Nah it's a reflection on building a dingy concrete underpass in a dark corner of a car park and would be the same in any town.

Will be great for those coming from Monksland to points East when this opens.

That said, the location of the bridge in the drawings from the link seems to indicate it being right near the Library. Which would be ****e if it runs parallel to existing bridge, dealing with traffic etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,113 ✭✭✭mr spuckler

yeah I think it goes across from the corner of the Radisson to near the old library alright.

The whole point is to separate users of the Greenway from the traffic, hence a completely separate bridge.

Had a look at it from the Roscommon side. The cranes as the crow flies are VERY close to the line of the White Bridge, and there's alot of greenery that they could put the track through. In this (admittedly guesswork) case, the bridge would be very far away from the artists impression. Indeed, the whingers who said it would spoil the view of Railway Bridge would be placated by this as it would no longer block it.

We need another bridge so that the council can attach a placque with their names on it, as happened in Church Street recently. They might as well stick one on the new tunnel at Montree while there're at it.
