What's this red button?!

I see no red button, I do see a red illuminated rocker switch though and would be curious as to what that does.

Does the cigarette lighter work (or not) when you turn on the switch and don't put the key into the barrel?

We had one of those Corollas years ago and the cigarette lighter would work with the key out. Maybe they added a switch to power it off.

I've seen plenty of weird buttons in old cars, usually for spots/fogs where there were no lamps before.
Without following the wiring it's a guessing game really.

I guess, the button is to activate the submarine feature.

That is definitely one option.

Another option might be to try and pry out the panel those three switches are on, as it looks like it clips into the dash

Actually, looking at it again, is it located to the right of the steering wheel? If so take off the cowling around the steering column, you should be able to check/release it from there

Lol, I figured there would be a billion and a half versions with different arrangements. I looked for "Corolla mirror adjustment control" and got like 300 pictures of different buttons, rockers and dials.

I can imagine going to buy a part: "I need this, it's for a 2002 Corolla!" - "Ah sure, but is it from January, March or October? Which week? Morning or afternoon production? the name of the engineer signing it off?"

I got front fog's added in the garage to mine Corolla, that's where they put the switch, I'd presume that's what its for here. They just used a generic switch?
I presume you've started the car, turned on the lights, and flicked the switch and checked?


if you don't have front fogs fitted, were they removed at some stage?

If you turn it on the dash will flicker red to warn of recalls on your car as you pass wifi areas..
Don't worry though it has probably burnt out the bulb by overuse!!

OP, if you've operated the switch and nothing appears to be happening, your only remaining course of action is to remove it and see if it's actually got any wires connected to it and then follow those wires to see where they end up.
Removing/disassembling dashboard trim isn't usually too difficult, but it does require a bit of thought and care so as not to break stuff or leave visible marks or gouges anywhere.
If you're not confident of doing this yourself, there's bound to be someone among your friends or relatives who could do it for you.

I fitted a similar switch in a Fellah's car years ago.
Put a scrapyard windscreen washer pump and reservoir by the headlight so he could spray water sideways at people as a prank.

I always figured it would be a nice revenge to fill it with paint striper and hit the button when some prick undertook me on the hard shoulder At 140

Wrong. I have 2 saloons, one bought from dealer Jan 2000, built Oct 1999.

Reg is totally irrelevant - we're talking about build date - those, for obvious reasons, may be even a few months apart.

OP's no saloon anyway.

Removed the piece under the button but it didn't give me access. Thinking about selling this car soon so don't want to cause any damage. I think it'll need to wait until I next bring it to the garage. Might have another go after a bit of research on how to do it safely.
