Rishabh Pant absolutely brilliant today scoring 100 out of the 198 runs India got. Special innings that has given them a chance at a historic series win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

What an inning from Pant. Singlehandedly saved India. There were a fair few people Indians on Twitter looking for Pant to be dropped after the last test. Although to be fair, there are a lot of Indians.

I think South Africa will chase the rest down though. They can be a bit frail. Van Der Dussen is great for sticking around. Bavuma is usually good for a 20-30. The lower order guys may have to chip in but it should be in hand.

A great series. All 3 test matches have been excellent.

Another tricky run chase made to look very easy by South Africa. Inexperienced side coming back from one nil to win like that. They have been very impressive. Looking forward to seeing them in New Zealand soon and England in the summer.

Don't know whats up with India. Burned out from nonstop cricket maybe. End of the road for Pujara and Rahane likely now.

Completely agree, I thought India would win the series but they are very inconsistent in all formats of the game.

Zim playing SL in and ODI today which could important in terms of Irelands finishing position in the super League table.

SL need 71 off 7 overs to beat Zim in an ODI today. Would be a benefit to Ireland if they Zim could pick up a win here

If the West Indian fielding was up to scratch they’d be firm favourites but those two drops … jezzzzz

England I’d say will realistically be looking at around 170… worrying from an English point of view how many poor delivery’s they’ve not taken advantage of but as I type Roy is hitting sixes for fun out of the ground..24 runs from that over, all off Roy’s bat.

Thankfully DRS is in play, umpires looking like they stumbled onto the field from the pub such is their cluelessness as to what’s happening in front of them… 11.9 required… game over..

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

Agreed, the umpires have been poor. A doddle for England from here...

That was some final partnership by the WIndies, Hosein and Shepherd really pushed hard. They were out of it with 5-6 overs to go and end up losing by 1 run, if the umpire had called that second ball of the final over as a wide, they might have gotten the draw or the victory.

Mahmood is under pressure now, a tough night tonight and he wasn't great in the first match.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

England win by a single run.

Mahmood and Jordan seriously expensive… 11.25 & 13 their economy rates..

when plan A the length ball was costing them serious runs… they just continue to bowl length balls…

West Indian batsmen doing a number on the England attack now….

    54/2 after 6… 9 an over is the rate....Pooran with 32 off just 17.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

WI 153/3 after 15...some performance so far, England's bowlers are struggling.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Powell.. 107 from 53…a hell of an innings.. 201.89 his strike rate…power and timing was exquisite.

innings come to an end… 224-5.. 11.25 the required rate for England who had 3 of their bowlers go for over 14 runs an over…

    England won’t win this…

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Some great talents in the West Indies team. Powell today, Hosein the other day. Fine time to perform with the big IPL auction coming soon. The last T20 world cup might just be a blip.

Banton needed that score. Puts himself and Salt in the shop window too. Same old failings for England with the ball. Its Archer or nothing for them it seems.

True, the West Indian side has been dead in the water for a while but looking like a resurgence is on the cards…

watching Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka in the U19 World Cup… An entertaining watch but the Afghan side won’t be endearing themselves to the international casual observer or neutral…en masse appealing for a wicket under the ‘double touch’ rule..which if they were as up on that rule as their vociferous appeal might have suggested, didn’t apply as the ball was neither going to hit the stumps or find it’s way to a fielder..almost an intimidatory feel to the shout.

Sri Lanka need 75 from 163 but are 7 down… fascinating conclusion in the offing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Afghanistan win.

Sri Lanka requiring 4 from 18 deliveries, 9 down and loosing their final wicket to a calamitous run out that nobody involved will forget anything about for years…

last pair just strangely started looking more nervous as they got closer to the finish line, they’d done the hard work then a mix up running and goodnight…

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

England set WI 194 for victory….

A solid start by West Indies in reply 56-0 after 6

A poor start by Billings, loosing sight of a Moeen Ali delivery that clips Mayers glove and pops up for an easy take but he can’t see it, hits him in the foot. Tymal Mills all over the kip, a poor bowler, he goes short, wide and slow and disappears for two sixes and a four before finding his radar, a bit.

Jordan starts his spell bowling wider then he’d like, erm, twice, 4 and 4…

alright having a good total but if you ain’t got bowlers to consolidate .. not looking remotely threatening aside from one chance and not economical..

I have said it before, but how is Chris Jordan an international cricketer, he is absolutely useless

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

Broad and Anderson have been dropped from the WI series. An absolutely disgraceful way to treat them. Effectively retiring them despite the fact they are still their best 2 bowlers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

They can't make 300 runs so they drop their two best bowlers. Has Robinson used the few weeks to improve his fitness enough to bowl a third spell? It needs to be an all new top seven to justify dropping them.

Anderson didn't play Hobart so saving the SCG game could be his last. I think he's more than earned enough to go out on his own terms.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

It would be interesting to see who made the phone calls to them. Collingwood was only hired yesterday. If Root didn't man up and made the calls himself then he is not fit to lead the team.

They have been lurking at Broad for a few years now. Dropping him every once in a while and then having to go back to him, for him to prove then wrong time and time again.

Anderson will be fuming. They could put his phone call on PPV. It would probably raise more money than the hundred.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

What's James Taylor still doing there. I see his name attached to Strauss and Collingwood in making these decisions. Very sad the way his career ended and all but what has he done the get the job in the first place and then to keep it. He's Notts, Hameed is Notts. Is that why he was picked? It can't be on watching him and knowing what was waiting for him in Australia.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

I wouldn't have a huge issue with leaving Anderson behind, thought Broad might be brought, they're always bracketed together but Broad is only 35. England need to develop their test team and the West Indies tour is a good opportunity to try players out, even a weakened England team will be competitive with the WI.

The fixtures in the England summer will be more challenging and it's likely we'll see them back then.

It does look like the end of thd Test road for Buttler though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

England haven't won in the West Indies in almost twenty years and it was in the 60s before that. Looking at that squad I don't see it changing.

Like, how was Pope picked? Dan Lawrence couldn't get a game in Australia but is in again. It is great to see Parkinson in though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

It was somebody's decision to cut Broad and Anderson out. Whether it be Root or Strauss. Strauss said something along the lines of that their careers are not over and it will be up to the new yet to be appointed coach to decide.

Now....Who will be interviewing the new coach? It wouldnt be Andrew Strauss would it? And of course he will be asking the interviewing coach about bowling. So if the potential coach says he has great plans including Broad and Anderson, do anyone believe that Strauss will actually hire that coach?

This is the exact same stuff that happened with Kevin Petersen. They hired Peter Moore's after freezing KP out knowing full well that they didn't get along before then and he would never ever push to have him selected.

The new coach will know the drill in the interviews. No Broad and Anderson or no job.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Anderson will be 40 before the end of the next international summer, Broad 36…

maybe it’s a case that it’s just too much of a pain in the arse trying to juggle almost 76 years of 2 strike bowlers who can only really bowl in short spells nowadays….

I’d pick Anderson, dump broad… have Anderson bowl 4.. 4 over spells with one maybe 5.. to ultra attacking fields.

cant have two fast bowlers who courtesy of age, miles on the clock are limited to how much they can bowl.

I can see why they might want to move on, they'll have to eventually and in Anderson's case probably very soon anyway. Had they not just had their ass handed to them in Australia would they still be doing this though? I doubt it, and their latest humiliation had little to do with Broad and Anderson. You'd think these two have earned the right to go out on their own terms, especially when they're still contributing to the team.
