Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Trying not to sound too much lime an old timer but football back in the 1980's was much better. Not as much play acting.

This is not true and the reason is that you haven't really got anyway of knowing.

Why? Because there was hardly any live football on TV.

The European Cup as it was then was not shown live except for the final so the only time we got to see foreign players was in International tournaments and then the play acting of Latino players was obvious. Diving was an issue just as much then.
Some games were truly awful as well and it was 3 points for a win combined with new back pass rule that changed the game in my opinion.

Germany 06 was a great World Cup.

Hernandez should enjoy that moment as he is most definitely not a top level player. Really hampered Madrid tonight and with Benzema I think they would have filled their boots.

God some of the matches with the backpass to the goalie

So because it wasn't one of your favs, it was dire?

    Good logic there.....

The skill levels were lower, the tackling more dangerous

Agree....take a look at some of the tackles inflicted on the likes of Maradona back in the 1980's

Some would be straight reds nowadays and they weren't even getting cautioned!

Always goes that way when two big teams from Spain pair up, it ruins games.

Stupid Real Madrid. All I wanted was penos.

Why did you deny me penos?

Decent goal poacher but terrible at leading the line. Not near the required standard for Real Madrid but they won't care tonight.

I don't agree with that at all.

I think skill.is more to the fore nowadays

Then Holland in the 70s were better than Holland now

    Depends what you are watching
My point was that for me 80's football was the worst I've seen, before the back pass rule was introduced you had mind numbingly boring games with little actual play.

For me the football in the late 90's was better before the play acting took hold but although football now has its issues I still think in general its far better than the 80's

So we can watch Alba Busquets Ronaldo Neymar Pepe and Ramos have a roll about on the ground for 180 minutes. Can't wait.

Id rather they did it in the semi and not the final.

If you get a penalty and your team wins your fan loves you!

Some here think hard fouling is a less crime than play acting they are both cheating!!!

Leicester and Chelsea might be playing their refix the same night so you might have that to watch.

Players won't stop diving when referees start giving out more bookings, they'll stop when referees start actually giving free kicks in situations where the player stays standing after a foul.

I really like Darragh Maloney. Talks a lot of sense.

    Diving is against the rules.

It's very difficult to prove a dive. Minimal contact is still contact!

The diving and other shenanigans is awful and an epidemic everywhere with Spain being the worst.
I don't think people can blame Atletico for the style they played tonight. If they opened up they would be ripped apart. Having had a 0-0 they couldn't really afford to be loose, they had to be tight and try knick one. The same issue happens with negative football in England. The annoying thing is we know Atletico can play based on games like Chelsea last year.

No problem with a solid defensive performance, that's good tactics, there's a difference between that and cynical play though.

That's actually a really good panel rte have there.

Didi and Darragh talk sense and then you have Eamon on the wind up for ****s and giggles.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

I could do without Eamon's bs tbf

I agree the dirt play around the tactics is what's destroying football increasingly

Came into this game kinda hoping atletico went tru, but happy enough they were beaten given the way they approached the game. Way too negative.....don't think the sending off made sfa difference either. They played fcuk all ball for first 75 mins, so what's to suggest they would do any different in the last 15 with 11 men, then they did with the 10

Hernandez is such a quality striker. His movement off the ball, looking for space is great to watch. Not the ideal type of striker to have playing beside Ronaldo, but a top quality player nontheless.

Wouldn't agree with that at all. Decent finisher and gets in some nice positions, punching way above his weight at Madrid.

Pissed me so much seeing the camera go to Ronaldo and showing him celebrate rather than Hernandez

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,676 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

    Ha, good man Darragh.

Richie: Ronaldo ran off on his own celebrating...

    Darragh: So?

    (Paraphrasing, but good to see.)
