German defense minister commented today "G36 has no place in the German army". After action reports with Bundswehr in Afganistan 2012, which involved protracted long range firefights with insurgents showed huge problems with overheating of the G36s light profile barrels.Cold bore accuracy is good but the rifle proved useless engaging at medium and long ranges with hot distorted barrels.Infantry platoons depended totally on their sniper team to keep Taliban at bay. Heckler and Koch disputed first reports but now reports are widespread.
Options of installing heavier barrels have found little interest with german defense ministry. Sorry end to worlds first third generation assualt rifle.:(

The problem with the weapon is that the HK50/G36 was never designed for sustained heavy fire, this is why the MG36 never took off, HK aren't in the business of making crap guns, all that is needed is an upgrade.
The Bundeswehr ammunition manufacturer also stated that the ammunition used burns more hot than other nations issue M855 rounds which adds to the problem.
So what is the problem? The problem is that the trunion holding the barrel in the receiver of the weapon is made of polymer, when the weapon overheats - the barrel sags as the trunion melts and accuracy goes out the window.
HK will no doubt offer a rotation phase program to the Bundeswehr to replace the polymer trunion's with steel ones and the rifle will be designated HK G36A1 (probably)
This kind of thing is normal to happen in weapons development, hence M16/M16A1/A2/A3/A4, Steyr AUG A1/A2/Mod14...... Etc.

Claims are being made that the agreed polymer type used on submitted test models was changed without notice by HK in production batches.

Regardless of polymer type, it should not have been used as the barrel trunion at all.
