KLM are looking at doubling their services to 28 weekly, and someone in the EI thread says that so Idk, seems like it could be true

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,527 ✭✭✭thomil

I’ll be honest, KLM makes a lot more sense. Amsterdam is their only hub and they can offer a much more seamless experience than Aer Lingus could, even during the days of the KLM/EI codeshare agreement. Would we be looking as an upgrade in equipment as well or just an increased frequency?

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 TheBrownBird32

I would assume there would be an equipment upgrade before frequency increase…

    So probably still the Embraers

How does this fit in with EI adding a plane to Cork? Amsterdam was their second busiest route from Cork with 14 flights per week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 TheBrownBird32

According to someone on the EI thread that announcement on Cork Airport MDs LinkedIn will involve Aer Lingus announcing routes to Bilbao and Bordeaux, so EI could put another plane here for that while also increasing frequencies on existing routes

I would be in favour of EI dropping AMS so as to use a new plane to increase frequencies and add even more routes. So long as KLM go ahead with their doubling of frequency. While it doesn’t hurt having two airlines going to AMS, I’d prefer one airline going there if it meant we’d get more routes elsewhere. Bilbao and Bordeaux would be a little boring though. I’d love to see a Scandinavian city (or five) added

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 989 ✭✭✭revelman

it’s funny you say that because for me it would be completely the opposite. I find Scandinavian cities really boring, apart from Helsinki, which I know is not really Scandinavia. I think Bilbao would be amazing. Just shows how subjective these things are!

One thing re KLM, I know of a person who travels the route on a regular basis. She was saying KLM always much pricier . Anyway would welcome BilBao.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 TheBrownBird32

KLM is a full service airline, EI is mainly low-cost. Thats why

KLM = onboard sized bag (not guaranteed to be onboard, but usually is), drink (including alcohol) and 'snack' (cheese sandwich, usually) in the cheapest fare. Even if you don't want them, you do pay for them.

Also a reasonable loyalty scheme; baggage and some flexibility in all fares above the cheapest; Eurobusiness class and the ability to book a business class spaced seat without the business class service etc. Again, nice but you are paying for them even if all you wanted was a cattle class seat and a personal item sized bag.

I have zero interest in going to a Scandanavian city, btw. It's just we have enough Spain destinations, it would be nice to see something different from the airport!

Daughter has a flight to Amsterdam booked with EI for March so I presume the moment the flight is pulled she should get an email?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,966 ✭✭✭yagan

We don't have any north Spanish options, and not even Madrid, which would be excellent as a train hub for all of Spain.

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/investment-plan-to-prepare-airport-for-five-million-passengers-with-new-solar-farm-above-car-park/a385425899.html

Very interesting article, seems the DAA are serious about the 5 million pax number. Also interesting, the article seems to confirm that KLM are doubling their services and call out Air France looking to expand too (hopefully to year round again). It also mentions that "virtually" all airlines currently active at the airport are looking to expand for 25/26. If EI are dropping Amsterdam they will have to expand services significantly elswhere to keep the same activity at Cork, never mind expand. Also interesting is that there is capacity for 1.3 million pax across Ryanair, Aerlingus, KLM and Emerald for winter 24/25 and 3.1 million pax is the prediction for 2024.

Let’s just say EI drop AMS at the end of March, and Bilbao and Bordeaux are true. 2x weekly to BIO and 3x to BOD, that’s already 5x weekly flights out of the 9x weekly AMS scheduled slots for most of the summer schedule.
EI would only need to increase flights on existing services by 1 (AGP, FAO, ACE and PMI for example) so it’s not really a significant expansion in my eyes to match up with AMS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭snotboogie

EI to AMS from Cork is currently 11 per week in the winter schedule. Bordeaux and Bilbao are likely to be seasonal so that a pretty big hole to fill.

The rumours are that KLM is to double its offering - I can't see that involving 4 daily flights - thats more flights (but less PAX) than EI and Heathrow.

I can see them using 737s on the route instead, and keeping their flight times. That would be great, as the crosswind tolerances of the Embraers are less than 737s, meaning a disproportionate amount of flights get diverted to Shannon during westerly winds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 154 ✭✭TheBetsy

It would actually be the same number of flights as EI at LHR.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭snotboogie

I'd imagine they would mix the aircraft like they do in Dublin; 737 for the morning flight, Embraer 190 for the afternoon and Embraer 195 for the evening would almost exactly double the number of seats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 633 ✭✭✭DylanQuestion

I wonder if Air France would have an interest in anything other than Paris?

I'm not mad about the busy markets either, especially as a weekend break, as germanic countries are otherwise closed on Sundays. But I'll happily defend Salzburg as a winter destination. It is is really stunning and sparkling in winter, and very easy to spend a week around the area or travel along the danube to vienna. Austria is renowned for classical music and choral heritage, and the square for the Nikolaimarkt is in a unesco world heritage site. And I don't think there's anywhere that does cakes and coffee like the austrians, it's really another level. Kardinalschnitte & Maria-Theresia Cafe is my order if you're buying. :)

Thank you for that very helpful suggestion, but I'll wait til after the silly xmas nonsense has passed to enjoy Salzburg.

If Amsterdam goes, besides Heathrow, Aer Lingus is pretty much just a sun holiday carrier in Cork. It's depressing. I doubt there's truth to this rumour of another aircraft based in Cork next year.

Not looking forward to this new expansion of the upper level of the terminal. One of the pleasant aspects of the terminal is the high ceilings. It's already stuffy enough in there as it is.

New TUI route to DALAMAN starting June 23rd via Cork Airport on Instagram!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,689 ✭✭✭✭ACitizenErased

No airline linked to it on the TUI website yet, which is odd. Monday's from the 23rd of June.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 TheBrownBird32

Will probably be Avion Express as usual or another charter airline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

Cork airport seem to have confirmed it

Gotta say I was not expecting that route announcement! How has TUI announced more routes from Cork than both EI and FR combined this year

For a four week rotation? So 4/5 return flights in total?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭whispering1

A bit hot for me that time of year but they might expand in due course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

I'd be of the opinion they are testing the demand for the route
