Pretty positive rumblings for Cork coming from Aerlingus COO Mike Rutter:
[font=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]The airline will buy eight Airbus A321 Long Range craft to aid future expansion. Mr Rutter confirmed that this could ultimately include a transatlantic service from Cork.

A press release means little. Pay heed to nothing until the service is announced!

Tbf the A321Neo is a game changer. Their deliveries are phased over 2019 and 2020 I think, so it would be 2020 at the absolute earliest, realistically 2021, as the Dublin routes will get priority. It's positive to see this get a mention in a paper that isn't The Examiner or The Echo. If the Norwegian routes succeed I think we'll see transatlantic Aerlingus from Cork early next decade., the lack of noise on the Stewart route is a worry though....

    Strange tweet from Cork Airport:
Transatlantic passengers travelling from @CorkAirport with @NorwegianUKI in 2017 now exceed 10,000. #Growth

With under 189 on both of the 737's used from Cork and 3 flights a week it doesn't seem possible. Am I missing something?

Maybe they've included bookings made for the remainder of the year in that stat?

That tweet is a load of sh1te.
It clearly says FROM Cork airport but their including figures for both inbound AND outbound. There hasn't even been 10,000 seats available out of Cork since it started.

Ive traveled with Turkish Airlines a few times recently from Dublin to Istanbul. Flights always seem full on the 737 wouldnt it be a great addition to Cork if they severed Istanbul from Cork opening up the east.

a lot of the Turkish pilots train at Cork airport these days. At least they'd be well experienced

Yeah, I reckon they've surpassed 10,000 ticket sales from launch until the end of 2017.

That wouldn't be possible, as there's only around 10,500 tickets been on sale in total from the start of July to December.

Cork Airport terminal to be torn down

    Also
Meantime, Volotea has announced, following its summertime introduction, to double its flights to Verona, near Lake Garda, in northern Italy next year. The airline plans to operate flights on Saturdays and Wednesdays from May 26-August 29

That's be no harm, I wonder will the old tower be included as well. Also it will be great to get a third airbridge, I wonder is the possibility of a NYC service starting to drive that?

Any chance they would make passport control a bit bigger? As well as the flight I came back on last sunday 2 others landed at the same time. Now even though queue moved quick enough it was packed enough..with increases in non EU passport holders coming through the aiport can see it becoming a issue.

Also flying out tues after lunch was a bit disspointed to see airside messy. It wasnt long after lunch not much left in the restuarant and down by the bar empty bear bottles and glasses left to be collected in the waiting areas. Cleaner going around didnt seem to interested either..wasnt a good impression on the airport although i will say it was a 1st time i found the place messy

Don’t worry, they’re at it already. Check out the comment sections of the usual suspects (Evening Echo, Examiner, et al). You’d swear that the new terminal is some kind of prison ward by some of the comments. Clueless would be an understatement.

As far as the move itself, that’s long overdue if you ask me. Wonder how they’ll arrange the new stands, and for what aircraft sizes?

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

    Interesting article from last week:
Cork Airport boss buoyed by strong numbers

Niall McCarthy expects 2.3 million pax in 2017, an increase of 4%. He hints at some struggles with the Norwegian route by saying they need to increase marketing. No direct mention of Stewart, just vague hopes of more North American routes if Providence proves a success. Nice, Berlin and Bratislava are singled out as routes they are targeting. Scandinavia also gets a mention. Brussels is ruled out as are incredibly fanciful routes to the Far East and Australia, pre clearance is ruled out too. He predicts further overall growth in 2018.

Reading between the lines (and completely guessing here) I'd say Norwegian is struggling with winter bookings and Stewart is completely off the table for now. McCarthy must have been absolutely gutted not to be included in the Air Canada routes, he had previously singled out Toronto and again puts emphasis North America rather than the USA. He seems to think Amsterdam will remain as a connection route for the foreseeable future.

Scandinavia should be easy enough to organise with Norwegian considering they have a plane laying over in Cork for around 8 hours during the day.
I reckon a single rotation to Scandinavia could be done in that time and it might suit Norwegian as well, should they need to swop planes on the Providence route

Unlikely to happen. That aircraft is "secure cleaned" and brought back to stand 2 hours before departure. Engineers spend quite a bit of time with it also while its on the ground. At a guess a Scandinavian route would be operated by an aircraft based in Scandinavia and only come in to Cork on a quick turnaround.

Also, the Scandinavian market is very hard to break into, it would need an exceptional amount of work to make it viable. The recent Shannon-Stockholm route did spectacularly poor.

Would be a hard destination to sell to the Irish market... hear tales of up to €15 for a pint!!

I did it from Shannon, flight was about 70% full but no idea how it performed overall. Wouldn't be in a rush back to Stockholm to be honest. Just another city, expensive and boring enough. Even the shops were more or less the same as here and food not up to much. Enjoyed the trip but not really on the list for a return visit. Way better cities to go to imo

Surprised to hear about bratislava flight, especially as Prague never took off. I assume its Ryanair, he should be trying to tempt popular Poland routes back to cork
