If this had happened ANYWHERE else in the entire country I would offer my full sympathy.

I just loath Dubs too much to bring myself to even pretend caring.

Jolly good old chap but what of the blow ins to Dublin that may have been affected, shall they illicit your tears or is their betrayal to the ruralists cast them as unworthy?

Not sure if serious .....cos I mean the difference between a Dub and a lad from Bray is just MASSIVE ...

Don't think the pics are doing the fire justice - I drove past this morning and there were sheets of flames raging out of the building, a proper inferno. Can't see too much inside having survived..bummer if you had sentimental/valuable things stored there..

Is it because we have jobs and don't shift our cousins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭anto9

Between house moves ,and moving abroad i had my things stored with that other Company ,U-STORE.As far as i recall the walls of each storage unit did not go right to the ceiling .There was just wire mesh on top so fire could travel from one unit to the next .That was my memory of U-Store in Waterford ,but i could be wrong .

Only Dubs are affected so I couldn't give a toss.

Did it ever occur to you that people from outside of Dublin would have been using the facility?

If Dublin Airport burned down would you not "give a toss" simply because it's situated in Dublin? No, because even someone as intellectually challenged as you would be capable of understanding that it's not just Dubs that would be affected. The fire at the storage facility today is no different. Cop on and think before you post in future

So you own a storage facility and have some difficulties. So you lift a bunch of valuables from the facility and burn the thing to the ground. Or maybe not...

I'd imagine there will be a thorough investigation to establish the cause of the blaze anyway.

The fire seemed to be on the south side of the building. Which side did you have your stuff?

I don't know. It wasn't me that brought it in. Moved out of Ireland a while back, so all my stuff that I didn't bring was in there. Not sure if I have insurance either. I was told it was included in the cost, but I didn't sign anything. It's just things at the end of the day, but all my photos and cards and letters were there.

I'd say your stuff is well gone, I've talked to a few people who drove past it and they said the pictures didn't do the the extent of the damage any justice, sorry :(

I'm still in the bloody office
Latest I can see is that the smoke has cleared.....unless the wind has turned and blowing it in a direction that is not visible from here.

Thanks Polo / Dean. That kind of sucks. I'm trying to remember everything I had in there. Just the pictures and stuff are really sticking out at the moment.

Can't really see much on the news. Just http://m.rte.ie/news/2015/0429/697579-fire-dublin/. I don't know how it was so bad.

The owner (I think), or at least the person I was dealing with was such a nice guy. There ended up being like a two month delay in getting my stuff in, as I didn't get to them on time when I was moving out, and left everything in my mum's and it was only brought in about a month ago. He refused to take payment for ages until I insisted - even though I had pre-booked the space.

I wouldn't say there's any point trying to contact them until they release a statement, I'd say they will need to assess the extent of the damage by lock up and then set up a dedicated helpline to deal with concerned customers.

Does anyone know how many lock ups they had there?

Myself and the wife were moving and things got delayed with the purchase so we moved all our things there while we stayed with family for a few weeks. So thats EVERYTHING gone.

Was down there at 7.30 and the owner was there, he knows nothing more than anyone watching the news because he cant get near it. He said he would post update on his site when he can.

from what I recall there is €3000 insurance included when you rent.

That wont replace photos and sentimental items etc. Couldn't care about the tv and washing machine, but the handmade items my grandmother gave us for wedding gif. Irreplaceable.

No - I won't get onto them at all yet, as I'm sure they will have enough to be dealing with.

We have stuff in storage in another facility close by and I can certainly understand how this fire took hold. The units are separated by metal partitions that go up to around 9 feet with a metal grille as a ceiling so the fire will easily jump from unit to unit. Given you'll have a mix of home storage and then small businesses stock there will be a lot of flammable material in a fairly compact area.

Aluminium has a relatively low melting point. Don't know what use those partitions would be.

They are used to separate the unit, a lot of these companies buy old buildings and refurbish them so its generally just mezzanine floor with aluminum used to create units.

On their Facebook page she said that the fire started on the opposite side to where her stuff was stored so does not know yet but that there were other businesses who stored stock in the storage facility too so it's an anxious wait.
