"One of the biggest changes in store is that its showbiz programme Xpose will be shown for three nights on the main station of TV3 and feature two nights on 3e"

The timings of the show is so odd, there is no pattern:
    Mon: TV3 - 8:00pm
    Tue: 3e - 8:30pm
    Wed: 3e - 8:30pm
    Thu: TV3 - 7:30pm
    Fri: TV3 - 8:00pm

They are sandwiching it between both soaps on TV3. You'd think they would put the 6 O'Clock show on at 8 Monday to Wednesday and take a break on Thursday because you know calling it the Half Seven show doesn't make much sense!

RTE2 did ok with the Bond films during the daytime. The Hobbits, Racing from Leopardstown and few nature docs did ok for them too.

The Chase topping UTV Ireland's Top 20, which makes TV3's decision to pull it away from the 6pm slot on Be3 utterly mindboggling. It's sure to return in 2 weeeks time, when The Restaurant and Renovation Nation won't get the same type of ratings.

Hopefully medialive will still report of Be3's ratings after the changed ownership. Would be great to get 3e's ratings too.

I have a felling that TV3 are hoping people will move to TSOCS, if 6pm shows across all channel get the same audience in total I cann't see TV3 move The Chase back. but it is a risk that TV3 seem willing to take, particularly for a show that hasn't rated well in the past.

And in a late move, Be3 actually broadcast The Chase today at 6pm. Even the graphics and announcement talked about The Chase at 6pm. You'd wonder why it's taken this long for them to change it, listings in TV magazines are out of date now.

The Voice UK had 122,000 with the number 16 to 20 all under 100,000 viewers. With Judge Judy getting 85,000 viewers on TV3.

The Chase takes up most of UTV Ireland's top 10 so madness to even consider moving it.

From other threads it seems Liberty Media must read Boards, and that they've kept The Chase in its regular slot on Be3 - must check it out tonight.

Well, 30 of the top 40 going to BBC 1, remaining going to ITV. No BBC II or CH4 or Ch5.

    Not surprised. No ITV drama?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

BBC1 and ITV will always take up the top 40. With RTE decision to move almost all sport to RTE2 in the 1980s RTE2 have since be represented, TV3 or UTV Ireland should have something in the top 20 as ITV. The comparison is pointless really, lets face it TV3 took up the vast majority of the top 20 in 2015, but only had 8% share while ITV had 15% or so. RTE2 comes after both TV3 and UTV Ireland.

Not that I'd particularly welcome a situation similar to the UK in which a small number of mass-market lowbrow programmes dominate the most-watched list, but this sentimental nation that so values the local seems eminently ripe for a programme like British Bakeoff to take hold and become a national obsession, like Love/Hate. Dancing With the Stars might be an attempt at that. But like all the imports that have been tried before, the RTE version feels cheap, stale and parochial in comparison. (I say that not having watched it, just having seen the set and the celebrities!) Anecdotally, it seems a lot of people are unaware of the extent to which RTE relies on production companies for the stuff it airs; most isn't produced in-house. So it may well be that RTE's inability to cash in with some Irish Bakehoff is a consequence of a poor domestic production scene. But maybe RTE, with its license fee funding, should be expected to better cultivate that. I don't underestimate the challenge of creating a hit show, but I feel RTE's have been subpar and lacking in quality.

There was a TV3 Bake Off, which had decent ratings by the channel's standards, but nothing spectacular.

Sorry, I meant a success akin to British Bakeoff rather than an exact copy of it!

I think we tend to like to watch sports more and perhaps drama, so you'd have to look further down the list. IMO the set for DWTS is quite good, but as you point out the independent producer that RTE choose and seem to chose for their big shows isn't very good. Shinawhil!

Also we tend to be far too picky, and pick on everything.

That TV3 Irish Bake Off was a spectacularly cheap and nasty copy of the BBC one. TV3 tried the Apprentice, but again it was tacky and cheap, laden down with product placement and poor contestants, judges, set, etc.

RTE have been forced to outsource much of their productions - some good, others less so.

Perhaps we need an increase in the licence fee if we want better programmes.

never saw IGBO but The Apprentice went downhill following the second series and the Celebrity version!

how do people feel about original formats such as The Restaurant and Ireland's Fittest Family?

I don't really understand why TV3 are producing both The Restaurant and Celeb Master Chef, similar programmes. They should consider a non-celeb version of The Restaurant.

Give RTE more license fee money, they'll just run even more chatshows where they interview their own employees. Other than sport (which could be accommodated elsewhere) what would we lose if RTE2 shut down tomorrow (and 2FM for that matter).

RTE are heavily controlled to the benefit of TV3 (ihmo).

TV3 are allowed to run massive amounts of adverts per hour, just like unregulated satellite channels. They were allowed to avoid being HD on Saorview, but be HD on the pay TV platforms.

RTE on the other hand must run two channels advert free (RTE NN, and RTE Jr/RTE 1+1). They have been refused RTE Plus which would be a channel using RTE's extensive archive, and also refused permission for children's programmes to be transferred from RTE 2 (which are advert free).

TV3 have no such restrictions, being free to repeat programmes endlessly.

The licence fee has not been increase much over recent times. It was €150 in 2003 and is currently €160. 7% goes to the S&V fund, and 20% of RTE licence fees must be spent on independent productions. RTE must also produce 365 hours of TV for TG4.

    No wonder RTE are broke.

The restrictions placed on RTE should be lifted, this will benefit free to air viewers and the State owned broadcaster, giving us a better service with more options and possibly more RTE stations.

Also rather than increase the licence fee, I would rater see a higher collection rate of the license fee.

Obviously a higher collection rate would improve revenue available and could possibly reduce the TV License fee for each household.

Either you worked a nightshift like me, or you live in Oz, but good afternoon from Ireland :)

Unfortunately we have alot of licence fee unpaid in Ireland, obviously that tab is being picked up by people who pay.

It needs to be placed on all telecommunications bill e.g. telephone bills, mobile phones bill, cable bills, satellite bills etc. collection idea should be put to bed.

    however we are off topic.

I have proposed before that the licence fee should be collected from the electricity bills by ESB Networks by a levy on all electricity bills at a rate of €12 per month. This would raise €144 per household. Currently the €160 is evaded/avoided by 15% of households, and An Post gets 6% or so for collecting it. So current net worth is approx €130 per household.

A second levy should be placed on the various payTV platforms of €6 per year per customer. This could be paid directly to 2RN for the cost of running the DTV network, which would cover the cost of HD.

I would also agree with Comreg/BAI requiring the various payTV platforms being required to take all or none of the Saorview channels. It is because, for example, that RTE NN is not carried by all platforms that it not taken seriously by RTE, and why RTE 2 is required to carry children's programmes.
