Back to the ratings ... ;)

Bake Off will be a huge loss for BBC1 this year. Will be interesting to see how it will fare on Channel 4 - maybe average 6million? Huge drop, but big for C4.

Yes and on that C4 spent 22million on the rights alone.

Medialive not publishing be3 figures anymore :(

Would have been nice to see how older episodes of The Chase did on the channel. So we won't really get a good idea of be3 until mid-Feb.

TV3 saw an increase for The Voice with 165,000 viewers.
Red Rock is doing as before with 122,000 for its opening episode of 2017, though it was a feature showing so a question as to how long people will last through.
The Graham Norton show has seen an increase to 102,000.
Xpose on thursday night had 100,000 viewers, but no showing for either Monday or Friday night all other eps getting under 100,000 viewers.
The Chase had 99,000 viewers with all other programmes under 100,000 viewers.

RTE2's only show to get over 100,000 was the globes where LA LA Land won over Sing Street
with the rest under 95,000 viewers, repeat of DWTS had 64,000 viewers

Very annoying. :( My hope was that we would get both 3e and be3 after the re-launch, but looks like we're left with neither.

Interesting to note the fall in the TV3 Group, presumably Be3 will fall back to 3e levels or lower this month.

In fairness it is not that much lower, but I did think that TV3 wouldn't reach above 10 in Dec, based on their June figure with the Euros.

3e will possibly fall back again, all depends on CBB and the horseracing.

be3 will almost definitely fall back to 3e levels but does that mean TV3 will increase its audience share, and the other factor is UTV proper, which could see growth due to the lack of simucast across the 3 TV3 channels. It would also be good to see ITV/STV audience levels.

It is like TV3 is afraid of 3e or be3 doing better than the main channel rather than thinking perhaps we should try to get as many viewers as possible.

Any 9pm ITV drama should simucast and if a 6pm start for The Chase works then let it air at 6pm, why are the afraid of retaining the TSOCS audience its unlikely to grow, and keep The Chase at 6 on be3.

15,000 for xpose on 3e, 89,000 for it between Coro st which is similar to the pulse.

But the sun reports that a source in TV3 says that master chef is on after 9 due to the soaps, clearly it'd have been on at 10 without the soaps.

Only once seen xpose get 100,000. Wonder how TSOCS is doing.

Those are absolutely awful ratings for Xpose, and no wonder people haven't a clue when or where it's on as it has 3 different time slots over 5 days on 2 channels.

This was moved to accommodate The 7 O'clock Show's move to 6pm. Can't understand why they'd move a show that has built up a loyal fanbase at 6 with Xpose, for a show that hasn't performed at all at 7.

They'd need to move Xpose back as soon as possible and either move T6OCS or axe it.

Masterchef Ireland got a rating of 104,000.

Piece in The Sun again, however I always question their 'insiders' who claim maybe people go to bed at 10pm on a Sunday as its the end of the week for the low ratings. However, it is on a Monday.

However, with this and Xpose move - the relaunch has not gone well yet.

TBH the insiders seem to no nothing about TV3/UTV Ireland ratings.

TV3 always had a problem getting viewers after 9pm. Why would the soaps change that?

I understand the idea behind TSOCS at 6 as its audience might be similar to emmerdale, but if it hasn't increased the audience at that time and Xpose has fallen back TV3 need to reconsider both.

Monday night at 10 should be give a big audience.

Apparently Dancing with... had an average audience of 646k on Sunday, probably at least 100k more than the LLS. Might this be the first time in a long time that a non-Drama (Love/Hate, Amber) series outperforms the old girl?!

Apparently Dancing with... had an average audience of 646k on Sunday, probably at least 100k more than the LLS. Might this be the first time in a long time that a non-Drama (Love/Hate, Amber) series outperforms the old girl?!

I'd say so, maybe first season of You're A Star?

TV3 isn't doing too well, I see them at 9% this month also. Xpose is doing well in the 8 slot though I think a better programme could do much better in that slot. 100,000 viewers on Mon and Fri night, though Coro Street was way down for Friday nights 8:30 episode.

Red Rock and The Voice are not improving, while Masterchef didn't make the top 20.

RTE2's yuff reality docs aren't doing all that well either.

That is a really strange drop. I don't see anything big on the other channels that should have dragged that many viewers away.

Masterchef would be better on a 8pm or 9pm. On Wednesdays there is Piers Morgan Meets ... at 9. Surely it would be better here.

Nationwide continues to be a beast for RTE. For a show that probably costs so little to make - it really does perform well.

New series of Big Bang on RTE2 on Monday at 9pm got 60,000. This probably shows why RTE2 don't show much US TV in primetime anymore, as it's just not popular anymore. Unless it's broadcast immediately after first shown in the US, and looks Homeland has done ok there.

If it's the case maybe RTÉ 2 should move its home produced and repeat programming to after midnight

There'll be disappointment with the performance of Striking Out. While not terrible, it received a lot of promotion (including cinema ads) yet was still beaten every week by an episode of Fair City.

Nationwide also one of those programmes that's indisputably befitting of a public service broadcaster. Reeling in the Years gets similar figures.

Big Bang Theory more of a casual watching show, whereas you'd imagine many actively tune in for Homeland. It's very popular in the States so I can't imagine it's cheap for RTE.

All US programming comes in packages. Average cost of an hour of drama is €2,000 (though this could have increased in recent years).

What ratings would an episode of Friends attract back in the day compared to BBT. I'm sure repeats of friends are pulling more then 60k now.

300,000 - 500,000 TBBT does compare in any respect.

Most programmes on RTÉ2 get less than 60k

I was aware they come in packages, but considering BBT is one of the highest-rated American TV shows (which has done well internationally) I assumed it would account for a large proportion of the package cost. €2k seems pretty reasonable. It's apparently very expensive to make now that the lead characters are getting $1m an episode.

E4/Channel 4 must pay a huge amount for it. They show it multiple times per day. I thought they showed Friends too much a few years ago, but they've gone overkill with TBBT.

RTE 2 have moved Friends out of primetime for the past few months. Was it not rating well or what was the reason. I know its an old show thats been on lots of times before, but there are over 200 episodes and I still enjoy it. Id rather Friends repeated on RTE 2 in primetime than repeats of Dragons Den and cooking shows from RTE One. Who else would?

Think I only saw Friends in the Top 20 once in 2 years for the time RTE2 were showing it at 7:30 with around 45,000. It's not something RTE2 should have even bothered buying. It was on TV3 and 3e for 6 or so years being repeated constantly before that. They should be looking at better programming.
The wildlife programming seems to do well in the ratings, so maybe aiming towards that. Options of creating a serious quiz show - bring back Blackboard Jungle, Know Your Sport, Where In The World with an updated twist. Perhaps a music show, movie reviews, car shows etc.. All good options. It's lazy to purchase Friends and leave it there for 2 years.

Much of that stuff would have to be bought from production companies: I don't think RTE has the in-house capabilities to create anything beyond a low-budget quiz show, nor to do more than one or two of them. Some American import is bound to be cheaper and less risky than something that would take up resources and do well to get above 100k on RTE 2. That's not to say that it wouldn't be preferable that they do experiment and be creatively ambitious on their second channel.

As a public service broadcaster RTE2s current audience would be acceptable if it had some type of PSB programming on the channel. However because it is largely made up of repeats (at least 60%), Frist run US programmes (40% at most) and Reality bites type Irish commissions (a generous 20%). And also sport when available.

RTE2 seems to be afraid to do anything.
