    Hi there,

My son is in 5th year not sure what he wishes to do but is drawn towards Engineering but not sure what aspect of engineering.

His career guidance teacher recommended doing "General Engineering" first in NUIG - we live in Galway (I think some other universities do this as a matter of course)
Then he could decide which area to specialise in.

Are there any down sides to this?
How does NUIG compare for Engineering vis a vis other universities?

    All input much appreciated.

    Hi Christine,

What aspect of engineering is he leaning to?

I went through the degree and graduated last year. I didn't choose undenominated, but I can assure you that those who did were at no disadvantage by the end of the course. There is a steeper learning curve in seconds year but I wouldn't let it influence your decision.

That said..if he knows what he wants to do - I think he should go for it. In the event that he changes his mind, there are ways to change course within the engineering faculty.

Thank you palmtrees, he is not sure....he thought he wanted to do computer science but to be honest I do not see him having a real flair for that - he starts programs but gets bored and never finishes them. I work in the IT sector myself and if he genuinely was interested in computer engineering I believe he would probably be programming in multiple languages by now.

But he loves almost everything else to do with computers...so I encouraged him to look at engineering - so perhaps electronic engineering but I guess thats what he needs to figure out.

Good to hear undenominated does not put you at a disadvantage and a little extra work in second year wont kill him!

As you might have noticed from the recent discussions in the media, christine, the universities are tending to move back to undenominated / omnibus first years in areas like science and engineering, rather than forcing students to choose before they even do their LC, let alone start the course.

So in fact there's a general acceptance that this may be the best way to do it, and it's likely that by the time your son is finished LC more and more students will be taking this route, even if the colleges haven't quite got to the point of filtering them all in this way.
