Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Stheno totally normal. I had that for ages too. And then even worse post viva!

Today I cycled in this gale force winds. Headwind all the way out, but 14 PRs on the way home with the tail wind :) then the fun started. Baking. I am officially stuffed. I, of course, had to taste everything. Now I'm too full to contemplate anything other than sleep.

    .

Thankfully vivas are not standard in my Masters, i.e. it's not mandatory.
Exam board is fourth of March I think, so not too long a wait.

Ah cool. Hopefully you'll get lucky and not need one. Although maybe they'll find it so interesting you'll be called in so they can grill you! Can't remember the protocol here for calling masters for vivas.

My supervisor can be a little indiscreet at times, they have about 20 students who do my masters as a full time degree and another of the same amount who do it as a part time distance learning option as I did.

When I asked about the viva she said "oh we only do those for students who clearly haven't a clue what they are talking about"

Ouch! Completely different for phds so. Most supervisors would strongly discourage someone from submitting a PhD thesis if they thought it wouldn't pass the viva. The only case I knew of in my old department was where the student refused to write a discussion chapter. She was told not to submit, she did anyway and failed.

Ah to be honest, there's an element of it all being a surreal experience for me. I only did the masters as I don't have a primary degree, and wanted to box that off.

I met a friend in town yesterday and we had hot chocolate sitting outside of The Sweetest Thing.
Coats on, like, but still, it was lovely to be out in the sunshine!

So many first world problems of recent times. Two prime examples:
    - finally had time to watch some TV online last night but our wifi was down and my 3g signal at home is worse than useless
    - the vending machine on my floor in work is out of coke zero AND diet coke, so I either have to a) drink regular coke or coke life, b) go to a different floor and hope they stock zero / diet, or c) walk about 27 steps outside my building to the tesco and buy some there.

    These are hard decisions.

On the upside, we raised over e700 in our bakesale in work yesterday for Down Syndrome Ireland.

When the specialist says that your particular injury makes his heart drop for the patient, you know you're in for a long one. :(

I'm entering year 4 now with this injury! The next step is a fresh MRI of both feet.

Gah! That must be so frustrating. Hopefully you get to the bottom of it. In the meantime is there any exercise you can do that doesn't put pressure on the injury? Swimming? Cycling?

I can do weightlifting and all of that jazz thankfully! I just can't do sleds (the others are kind of jealous :pac:) or lunges. Anything that extends the toe is out of the question. I miss playing soccer though. I could probably pop a pain killer and go for it but that's probably not wise.

Nah, ultimately you may cause more damage. It's probably better in the long term to try get things sorted.

Join the club :( It seems to be asshole central in here today! Doesn't help that the lab has a ridiculous temperature for some reason so I can only last about 10 mins before I start to sweat profusely whilst wearing my labcoat. I technically could go without, but it's actually a day where I'm using pretty harsh chemicals so I'd rather wear it. However we can't control the temperature and we're all roasting!

I hear ya! That was me yesterday, I was constantly being interrupted, I had a load of work to do with which was frankly over due, but people annoying me with urgent matters on top of everything else. Looks like today won't be as bad but still getting interruptions!
I need my boss to go away for a week and leave me in peace!

I could probably do with safety shoes. I keep spilling methanol on my shoes.

I would love my boss to be away for a week, I would get so much of my to do list cleared... As it is I keep getting "v v v urgent" stuff dropped onto my map throwing everything into chaos.

Ah I've that stuff for you btw, haven't forgotten you.

Anyway, after my truly screwed up morning, I'd a few nice things today.

I've a new customer I'm working with, and it's quite challenging, as a lot of their issues are essentially different perceptions of the same thing due to people having a different focus.

So we had a workshop today, and as one of them said at the end (paraphrased) "Wow, I didn't think there was any conflict to be discussed, but that was really good to go through and iron out our differences" This particular customers team is so far 100% male, so there were a few moments during the workshop where I had to be quite stern and step in, as tempers were flaring.

It was really good, I could see the perspectives changing

Then last night I did something I'd meant to do for years. WHen I was in school in the dark ages, we didn't have great insight into what it was like to get a perspective on what it's like to work in different areas, and I always wondered if the school I went to which was a girls only school in the Midlands, would be interested in giving their students a glimpse into the likes of me working in IT. So last night I emailed the school on their general address saying I was a past pupil, and outlining what I did, and asking if they would be interested in my coming in and doing a "What's it like to work in IT as a woman" type piece"

They came back this morning saying they'd love to organise it! I was dead chuffed! Think it would be a great opportunity to give young women thinking about what they want to do who might be considering IT a bit of an insight into the real world and what it's like.

    I think that's kinda cool :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

That's a fantastic idea Stheno! It would be great if it gave a few of the girls a bit of encouragement into tech if they were thinking about it but maybe weren't sure or had concerns.

Gerry Adams tops the poll here, surprise surbloodyprise. Why are people not put off SF by that man? Even discounting IRA and murder links, he actively covered up child sex abuse. Including of his own niece!!

I'm loving that out of 26 candidates, Renua only really have one hope left as all their other candidates are out or nearly out. Unfortunately that candidate is in my constituency but, although it's tight, it's looking likely that he probably won't get in. For the same of that I'll allow the FFer to get in!

Also, seeing some of my friends declare Mary Lou an "inspiration" became an automatic deletion.

I had a friend who voted for Mary Lou the first time she ran because she had nice makeup. Somehow, we're still friends.

Just noticed a friend encouraged everyone to vote for AAA/PBP, SF & independents. All people who have said they won't govern.

The only viable option is a FF/FG coalition. No other party has the numbers (since Mr Terrorist has ruled his party out).

Scary times ahead. Would not be surprised to be back in the polling stations soon. Hopefully the electorate can realise "oh wait, we actually have to elect a government rather than a group of randomers" and vote sensibly rather than reactively.
