It's depressing how a civil rights/equality issue has been turned into a political issue (more votes next year I suppose!) but congrats to all YES supporters. As mentioned before, didn't vote myself as I've moved constituency recently and have no stake in the issue either way but well done.

That fool fidelma Healy eames is on rte 1 now. Acting all smarmy congratulating the Yes side. She is still harping on about surrogacy and adoption. Apparently gay people were always equal to her. I think that anyone using 'the' before 'gay people' need to be shot.

Great result but thankfully it is all over. A lot of very important matters swept under the rug in the last few weeks. The referendum couldn't have come at a better time for the Govt.

Aside from the obvious 'yay equality' stuff, I really like that so many young people got up and voted.

So many things we vote on, the older generation are the only ones to vote.

Hopefully this is a sign that in the future, young people will get up and make their voices heard, because everything we vote on has an effect on the younger generation, too.

Looks like it's a question of how much now, thank god for that! The entire world is watching and it would be a serious embarrassment if the no side won, and of course it would be sad for all gay couples as well.

I think it's good that this referendum galvanised us younger people a bit. I've been registered to vote since I was 18 but a lot of my friends who weren't all registered to vote yes for this. It's more significant than just a referendum on marriage equality, in reality it has the potential to politicise an entire younger generation which is no harm.

A victory for the LGBT community yes but a victory for the young people of Ireland also.
Irelands youth have been spat on and **** on since 2008 as the older generation pulled the ladder up. We showed today how great we can be.

You can simmer down now - this referendum shows there is no 'silent majority' after all, the people have spoken, they are standing up for a better Ireland that doesn't bow down to harmful rhetoric, scaremongering, and the stink of the hardline religious influences.

This Referendum is done and the people have voted for equality (and fair play to them!) but let's not forget that there are several other important things going on in the country at the moment too.

But if ya like.. it seems that the attempt by the Govt to turn this into a political issue and sway voters with "feel good" sentimentality hasn't worked out too well so far.
