Public rights of way to Banna Strand

A lot of people don't realize that four of the public rights of way - the paths that give access to the strand - are being challenged in court. There is a web page called savebanna (dot com) with a google map showing the paths that are under threat. Thousands of people know and love this area but do not know that they could lose all access to Banna Strand between Sandy Lane and Ballyheigue.

Since the County Council decided unanimously to include them as rights of way on the new CPD map a lot of people thought the issue was sorted. BUT two separate landowners brought legal action against the council claiming that no public rights of way exist there. Two of the paths are on the Akeragh side of the river and lead to the Black Rock (ROW 3a and 3b). The other two are on the Banna side of the river and lead to the Small rock (ROW 3c and 4).

The two cases were "up for mention in" the Circuit Court this week (Tuesday May 12th ) but I understand they are being adjourned for a few months. If people want to stand up for the long standing, public rights to access the beach, they need to write statements that can be presented as evidence outlining how they used of the paths going back in time and in various ways - like fishing, walking the dog, etc. These statements need to be sent to the legal team at Kerry Coco. If anyone wants more info or wishes to offer support in gathering statements, there's a local committee and their email address is BannaAction(at)gmail(dot com)

To get the sheer scale of what could be lost here - just look at the map on the web page.
