    Are these 'catch-up' shows?
Do you only get the same res on LiveTV RTÉ1 & RTÉ2?

    Yeah catch up
Live were 720 when I checked, don't use them really

I dont watch it on any other apps, though I know their official Android app is shít quality as well

I wonder can any other users from here get better quality with it?

    Other suggestions :D
scraping the website for program info
Search isn't the best, A/z only shows one program per show - it might have 3/4 available

Just wandering where should other users get a better quality if not available form the source? rte saves the streams in a quality that is not the same as you'd get on the air or satellite, it simply will use too much bandwidth, as well as storage.

Plugin will show in A/Z as much as it comes from rte server, each show might have multiple episodes, but this does not mean that they're available, as rte does not keep them available for too long.

Again I'm open to suggestions and discussions, but please understand that I can not change quality and content availability from rte, as well my plugin is not scarping the site, it is using the same rest api as smart tv, or android app. I'm not interested in building a plugin that scrapes the site, they're prone to errors and hard to maintain, as soon as they change something on the site is very likely the plugin will stop working, that is what happened to all previous plugins.

I hope this is the last beta and will do a release this evening, please test as much as you can.

I would like to strip out the unnecessary files & directories for use on Linux only.
Can you advise which can be deleted or if shorter which should be retained?
I will be taking a guess, but would appreciate advise if possible. Thanks.

is the size of the plugin that critical for you? this might be the reason why you wont get updates. You can try remove in resources/site-packages: windows, darwin, android and resources/bin. As well I'll do a release version this evening, so you might want to strip that one.

    Thanks.
You have confirmed what I have removed and tested here. :)
All 4 TV channels working as expected.
I have failed to play a couple of 'catch-up' videos and am about to see if I can view them from the RTÉ Player in a browser.
This should indicate where the problem is.
    Will report back.

I see a lot of the following in the Kodi log
    14:20:47 T:139799141701376 WARNING: CreateLoader - unsupported protocol(plugin) in plugin://plugin.video.rteplayer.hq/?path=rteplayer&showid=10568485&icon=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.rasset.ie%2F000c2dd7-827.jpg&title=%5BCOLOR+blue%5DRT%C3%89+One%5B%2FCOLOR%5D%2FEastEnders

The above was from attempting, and failing, to get

    RTÉ2/Outlander 54:44

    which was odd!

this looks relievant, so this one works on the browser? the thing is that they might not use rtmpe on the website, will check it later.

web sire uses f4m flash media format, plugin is not capable to play this format

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,017 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

I have wondered about a notice that pops up when starting Kodi, to the effect that RTÉ streamer is started.
In the log is the following
14:57:16 T:140487523923712 ERROR: [RTE Player HQ] trying to start streaming service...
14:57:16 T:140487523923712 ERROR: [RTE Player HQ] streaming service started...
14:57:16 T:140487523923712 ERROR: [rtestreamer] started on port: 7003
14:57:16 T:140486958872320 NOTICE: Start - EPG thread started

The reason for this query is that I would not expect any set up to be done for the streamer until the plugin is launched.
I am most likely misinterpreting this.

is started as a kodi service, I wont go in to technical details, but this is the way things work in kodi, many plugins use this facility.

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭zakalibit

I do not know why kodi does not playback rtmpe, vlc opens fine this:
    vlc "rtmpe://fmsod.rte.ie/rtevod app=rtevod swfUrl=http://www.rte.ie/player/assets/player_458.swf swfVfy=true playpath=mp4:/2016/0503/20160503_rtetwo-outlander_cl10568533_10568542_260_drm_/20160503_rtetwo-outlander_cl10568533_10568542_260_drm__512k.mp4"

reduced zip size by removing android ffmpeg binary, as it does not work now, I might distribute it as an extra addon.

i'm not expecting to fix/improve what you can't :pac:
so 360 is the best streams they have? i didn't know this for sure.

i know episodes are only available for a certain amount of time, that's not what i meant.
the a/z in the addon only shows the latest episode. if you use the search function, it'll give you all available episodes.
use dragons den as an example to check.

I do not think I can change that, unless there is another way of pulling A/Z listing, check other official plugins see what they do.

    RTÉ Player HQ V3.0.7
    - fixed cache timeout
    - fixed rtestreamer segment url parsing
    - fixed rtmpe streams playback
    - added RTEJr live stream
    - added max bandwidth limit setting for live and catchup streams
    - added ffmpeg path setting, needs to be used when there is no system default
    - added python Crypto modules for osx, mac os users can try live streaming (installed ffmpeg required)

check http://zakalibit.github.io/kodi.rteplayer.hq for latest documentation and plugin version

Somebody has reported to me that he has V2.0.2 installed on openelec, and somehow his network speeds are affected, i.e. they drop from 30Mbps down/ 5Mbps up, to 2 down / 0.3 up.

I do not see how the plugin can have such an effect on the network speeds, the person is suspecting the rte streaming service, that is basically a http server that works as a hls to http proxy.

So I'm puzzled, did anybody else notice something similar?

I believe I had some strange problems with that version ....... has the user tried the latest version to confirm the problem ramains?

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭zakalibit

But even on that version I can not imagine, streaming service did not change that much to make a difference, it's like to say that I opened a http stream in vlc and it slowed my broadband, that wat the rte streaming service does, reads the stream from rte, decrypts it, filters through ffmpeg, serves it to kodi as a simple mpegts http stream.

Anyway I'll run some tests this evening, however I remember watching other iptv as was testing the player and I did not notice any slowdowns.

The reported drop in connection speed seems to be similar to what happens if the eir TV package is subscribed to and used.

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭zakalibit

could it be that eir throttles back if it sees user using rte streams? i.e. promoting/favoring their own tv package :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,038 ✭✭✭✭L'prof

I think this is what I'm looking for. I can't get the Irish TV addon to work any more. Does this have all the catchup content on it?

I doubt it TBH ..... but if the user has also subscribed to eir TV then there might be some interaction?
