epilator question

Hi, i'm using an epilator on my legs but am getting ingrown hairs..then I start squeezing them(I know I shouldn't but I can resist!) then I end up with big red marks on my legs..any advice on the correct procedure for this..or should I just go back to shaving!!!

I imagine some sort of alcohol base on cotton wool would do the trick though.
