    Hi,

I removed a HDD from a laptop today, I was getting "operating system not found" error on boot up. I was thinking I could read and copy the files across onto another newer laptop we have, but it isn't being seen by the newer one.

Any help towards getting this HDD recognised, greatly appreciated.

I'm using an adaptor with 2 Usb connectors if that makes any difference. I've checked the usb ports in device manager - nothing there.

If it's not recognised by another machine then it's more that likely damaged to the point that only a specialist recovery company can repair it, but it is very expensive, lucky if you get away with €500...moral of the story is Back Up, Back Up, Back Up.

If its a SATA (ie. Not spikey connector) Try plugging it into a spare sata connection on a desktop pc.
The 2.5inch sata drives are compatible and can be put in a desktop.
Sometimes those older usb extensions dont provide enough amps to
Get some of the older drives spinning correctly.

if the drive is over 200 gig it may need a caddy with its own power unit.
or just try it in any pc,
connect up data, power, cables before you turn on the pc,
put drive on a flat surface,
or place it inside pc, where it will not move .put tape on drive ,underneath to protect against any short circuits.

Make sure that you are booting from the internal laptop drive and not the damaged one. You can change the boot ordering in the bios
