Does anyone attend a grind school or know somebody that does because they sometimes have inside info and their predictions tend to be good? :)

Does anyone have like a simplified steps explanation of the role of ATP ??

Does anyone have like a simplified steps explanation of the role of ATP ??

    Adenosine triphosphate

Role: stores, transfers and provides energy.
Carries energy from where it is produced to where needed
The energy of ATP is stored in the bond between the 2nd and 3rd phosphates.

    Respiration
Mitochondria are often seen in high numbers where a large amount of ATP is needed.

    Formation of ATP:
    ADP + Energy + P → ATP + water - (Anabolic reaction)

Release of energy from ATP: ATP + water → ADP + Energy + P - (Catabolic reaction)

I think that covers everything, know the diagram too maybe?

Does transcription or translation ring any bells?

Could someone in basic steps describe DNA replication and protein synthesis? I know it's alot to ask but dear jesus i need help. My book is so hard :(

I'm kinda skipping the genetics and DNA chapters, can't seem to get them with their fancy words. I'll just learn their definitions from the glossary, and leave out the whole replication thingy.

I posted this a while back, it's as simple as I could make it. Worth 21-24 marks so it's more than enough for any question you'd get on it.

    Protein Synthesis

    1. DNA Double helix unwinds
    2. RNA nucleotide bases bond with DNA strand
    3. RNA polymerase assembles these bases to form mRNA.
    4. mRNA moves into ribosome
    5. mRNA codons attract tRNA anti-codons.
    6. tRNA & mRNA amino acids bond in ribosome
    7. Protein folds into shape.

That's the detailed events of it, you'd probably get away with just knowing transcription and translation definitions though, and where they occur.

Anyone have any abbreviations they want to share? All of my one's are from Revise wise, eg.

BRENO - Behaviour, Response, Excretion, Nutrition, Organisation (characteristics of living organisms)
Party Monday And Tuesday - Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase (phases of Mitosis)
I Caught Leprosy Through Careless Experimentation - Isolation, Cutting, Ligation, Transformation, Cloning, Expression (Genetic engineering)

Those are the ones I can think of the top of my head.

Okay, this is all very interesting regarding the surplus answers! Our teacher always drille dinto us not to put down an extra one unless we were sure.
SO in a long question, if they ask you to state three functions of the liver.. can i name five if i am not sure of some of them? Then the examiner picks the correct ones?

I can't post the link but if you go to youtube, type in biology predictions leaving cert 2015 , there's a man called eoin jackson who puts them up each year. His predictions are exceptional. Handy to know what to focus on when you are close to the exam!

Are his predictions really that accurate???

Peter's Granny Dances Mainly For Men

    Plant Sex

Pollen grain germinates to form pollen tube
Grows down style (pollen tube) & enters ovule via micropyle
Division of generative nucleus by mitosis to form 2 haploid male gamete nuclei
Male gametes move down pollen tube to ovule
Fuse with egg cell to make a zygote 2n
Male gamete fuses with 2 polar nuclei to form an endosperm nucleus

I have some pretty memorable ones that I wouldn't be allowed to share, that's for sure :P

The weirder the better though, you'll remember it that way.
