Not matter what your politics are you have to admire Averil Power for adhering to her beliefs . She always impressed me as a very committed ,capable and courageous individual and will no doubt make a big impression in whatever walk of life she chooses next. People like her are needed in public life and I hope she decides to run in Dublin Bay North in the next election.

20 Years on the Haughey dynasty still casts its shadow.

are we supposed to be conned over by a fight between FF Haughey and, up until today, FF power?

You would have to believe Martin on this, she was not going to get it her own way and walked.
Is she a loss, we will see at the next election.

Yeah, I was under the impression that Sean Haughey was going to get that ticket. It's a blow for FF and MM after winning that by-election last weekend. I have a feeling that she might join Renua.

First off Lucinda is avidly Pro Life and Renua is savagely Right wing on economics. Not on Averil's compass.

She's nailed on to join Labour or possibly SF if they give her a cushy constituency.

Genuinely curious why on earth people think she would want to join Renua?

On all the social issues which Averil has made her name (especially the one from the weekend just past), Renua are completely opposite. Doesn't even strike me as being even vaguely a match.

Fairly sure I read before that herself and Lucinda have previous going back to their time in Trinity.

She looks well shook on Claire Byrne, must have had the full backlash of a vengeful FF all day. Well shook indeed

She's perfect for what Ireland needs, a economically center - socially liberal party. Unfortunately such a thing does not exist in Irish politics. If you want social progress you need to vote left.

They're left? Not as far left as in other countries I'll grant you. But that's down to the bunching of parties in the center here, rather than a traditional left-right divide seen in most other European countries.

Either that, or that its 4-10 months before the next GE & Avril wants to be elected.

I think Averil would easily get elected

People said the same in 2011, she was well out.

If she can find the right platform to capture the same voters who she undoubtedly energised to vote in the referendum, then she'll easily get elected, I suspect.

I just hope she has chosen the right constituency this time. Dublin south East could just be a little too middle class for her.

The Swedish thought the same thing, but we all know how that turned out. I think it best if we stick with centralists rather than the left or the right.

    @ers.

Very disappointed in FF, think they should just knock it on the head now and leave the people who are actually interested in bring this country to its full potential, to it. There just an annoyance and distraction now.

Just when Micheál thought he might have a window of calm waters too! Although any party that sees old stagers like Bobby Aylward as the way forward when dynamic younger folk like Averil are leaving is in deep trouble.

You think this Averil Power will join Sinn Féin?

Penrose , is a LABOUR PARTY TD

The best way to get a catalyst out of ff/fg/lab is to nudge a brown envelope slowly in their direction.

That will be a catalyst for them to move in your direction.

Yes, yes I know all that, somebody waved that poster at me yesterday too and I'll say what I said then, stranger things have happened.

How many free floaters do you hear being courted by every party across the boards. Labour lad jumps ship and joins FF, FF lad jumps ship to SF, other FF lad considers Renua etc etc?

They are an unprincipled bunch of self-preservationists all, and would sell their grannies for a street of votes. Its the nature of the multi-seat system.

I wouldnt bet against Averil ending up in any party or none.

Promotes? This is Irish New Labour we're dealing with. A Labour minister cut the ankles off the public sector Unions for the last 4 years. Two Labour ministers in the "economic management Council" went along with Frankfurt's way for the same length of time.

Its fair to say Brendan Corish is long gone...

    From RTE.ie
Meanwhile, the Fianna Fáil organisation in Cork City and County has been dealt a blow with the sudden resignation of long time party activist Ken Curtin.

Mr Curtin, who was Fianna Fáil's Public Relations Officer for Cork East, and Secretary of the Cobh Cumann of the party, announced on social media that he was resigning from both positions and from the party.

Mr Curtin led the Yes, Equality Cork campaign and had expressed disquiet at the lack of party support on the ground for the Yes campaign and flagged at the weekend that he would be considering his position.

He said he had reached his decision independently of Ms Power.

He said he felt that Fianna Fáil was no longer a right fit for him and for people with a more liberal outlook.

He said their voices are being drowned out by very elderly, conservative voices.

Its time for the right wing of ff/fg/lab to officially form the one party they already are.

When in power (which is the only time to judge them) there is not one thing that any of them would do differently.

Stop conning the Irish people come clean and officially "come out" as the one party that fg/ff/lab already are.

Right wing in what sense - economically or socially? The socially conservatives are all that FF has left now so that would be their natural home. All they need now is a leader who espouses that. If they get O'Cuiv in instead of Martin they are sorted

An FFG/FF/Lab coalition would be an ideal scenario for me next time round.

Dear me, such silliness. I can think of two good reasons why the bould averil would never join Sinn Fein, assuming the shinners would have her, which they wouldnt.

Supremely stupid behaviour from FF. When your party has one female member of the Oireachtas and one Dubliner member of the Oireachtas, and they're the same person, you need to do whatever it takes to hold onto them. The party appears to have learned nothing from the past eight years, and has decided to seek a route back to power by serving rural conservatives above all else. Oblivion deservedly beckons.

Its true, completely insane. Why any party would entertain a slightly washed up, tainted, stale 53 year old man, known more for parish pump representation than a progressive, younger, in touch woman with a progressive outlook is beyond me.

I'm not sure courting the over 70's vote is a good long term strategy...

Personally I'd love if O'Cuiv took over, it would guarantee their destruction.

FF are desperate for dublin seats. Power wanted them to stick all their money on her in dublin bay north even though their private polling showed she was an outside shot. Wasn't gonna happen and now Power has thrown the toys out of the pram. Bums on seats in the dail are more important than bright young things

Depends if your serving the best interests of the party or the country though.

FF f*cked themselves over this, and I'm delighted.

Really don't think that Fianna Fail have anyone who would do a better job or be more palatable to the public than Micheal Martin. That's not to say I think he's doing a good, just that they have no-one better.

In fact, it's quite clear that bad as he is, the rest of the party will not follow even his half-hearted lead on abortion or same-sex marriage.

If he goes, FF will be headed for the crossroads at Ballymagash.

Credit where it was due, Michael Martin pushed Averil Power forward within the party prior to the 2011 general election and again for senator. Without his backing she would not be a senator.

In my opinion she is leaving the FF party on the coat tails of the marriage referendum to cliam some kind of moral high ground.

She wanted to be a lone candidate for selection at convention and she didn't get her way. A rash decision in my opinion.

There will be both female FF candidates as well as FF members who strongly backed the same sex marriage referendum who will comment on her move and reasons over the coming days I would reckon.

It's a shame she left, she would be an asset to any political party. I think when the dust settles she will be more damaged than FF. I think her ambition has gotten the better of her.

Haughey won't even say which way he voted. The crack on his arse must be fairly sore from that fence.
