Any Nuvi 760 owners here?

    Hey folks,
I have a few Nuvi 760's I'll be updating the maps on soon. What I've had to do before, is select about 1.76gb worth of maps to put on the device as that's all the space it has, where the whole EU map set is about 3.4gb or so. What I did last time was try gather a few old SD cards and put the map sets on this, but there were a few issues with this, slow down, restart required etc which I think may have been down to bad/unsuitable cards.

Does anyone know a reliable card I can use for this that won't hinder performance but is affordable at the same time? 4 or 8GB will do as I only use the Nuvi for maps, no media etc.

Is it possible to upgrade the firmware somehow and how do I go about this?

Any feedback would be appreciated :)

It won't make a whole lot of difference what card you get to be honest as long as it's a recognised make, AND you get it from a reliable source as there are a lot of fakes out there on fleabay and the likes. I have a Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 6 card in my old 760 and it works fine. It would probably make sense though to get a microSD card that comes with a fill-sized SD adapter as full sized SD cards aren't used a lot any more and that way, if you get rid of the 760's at some stage you'll have cards that can be reused in something else. You can get a 8GB class 10 (i.e. faster) micro SDHC from memoryc.com, an Irish firm based in Celbridge, for less than an equivalent full size card.

As regards updating the firmware and the maps, just install Garmin Express and it'll do the rest. The first versions of this were very flaky, but it seems to work well now. I don't think there's been a software update for the 760 for quite some time now though.

Having said that I replaced my 760 with a new 2545LM and don't use it any more.

Thanks a lot Alun, never even thought of the micro/full size adapter idea. I was kind of hesitant to buy 5 new regular SD cards as they aren't really used in today's tech anymore so that's a perfect option and at only €5.40 each it's grand too. I'll be buying 5 so will get the free delivery too.

Pity I didn't make this post earlier, I just bought another 760 off ebay last week, maybe we could have done a deal :) I just wanted the same GPS as the other ones so nobody has to relearn.

I primarily use Google on my phone now, I find the traffic and route suggestions invaluable, but it's good to have the garmin working away on constant in the background for longer journeys.

My old 760 wouldn't be much use to you .. the on/off switch is broken, and although it can still be used without it, it's a bit of a pain.

Yeah, a few of my switches are a bit troublesome too but once it sits in/out of the cradle it switches on/off so it's manageable. You'd still probably get a few quid for it on eBay, I was watching a few auctions and they were still fetching a decent amount. The one I got was in PWO and I paid £40/€57 for it shipped from the UK.

Just to say, I ordered the cards around 10:15 yesterday morning and have already received them, even with the super saver free delivery. Nice service from MemoryC!

Yes, they're a great company to deal with, I use them for all my "memory needs". Plus if you're really, really desperate to get something ASAP you can drive over to Celbridge and pick it up yourself.
