Mad that Allen's nearly had 100 games for yiz now, about time he kicked on.Doubt he'd go for much more than half of what was paid for him though

It's just one of those things - not quite what's needed if you want to push for the higher honours, and he just doesn't quite fit with the players we have but I think he'd be a terrific signing for the likes of Swansea, Stoke or West Ham. Relieves pressure and will work well with creative players in front of him, which each of those clubs have. Southampton if they lose Schneiderlin could do worse too, him beside Wanyama, with Tadic in front of him might be a nice little trio. Pelle up top, Mane to one side of him, Elia or Long to the other...nicely balanced team there to be honest.

I sat if we sold Allen (I don't want us to he is a good player) we would get our money back. There's plenty of mid table teams like West Ham, Stoke, palace who would pay 15m for him.
Sure we got that for Carroll

Lets just hope Big Sam finds a new club fairly quick.

I think you're beyond a bit optimistic there.Stokes record signing is Crouch for 10m,can't imagine they'd break that record by 5m for the likes of Allen.West Ham have bought a few players around that ballpark but a few of those haven't went well and Allen would be a big risk matching their record fee too.Maybe 10-12 at very best there but even that I'd find it hard to imagine.Maybe with the Bony money the Swans would go for him as he knows the surroundings very well.

If he's capable of breaking the transfer record or near enough of a few decent clubs is he not worth keeping?Guys only turned 25 after all,has plenty of good years ahead of him bar injury.

They challenged for the league last year and he had plenty of games, with Suarez of course there was a lot more energy ahead of him and that's probably what he needs more of,some pace in front of him.Gerrard,Balotelli and Lambert weren't the most sprightliest of players to have playing around and ahead of him this season.Sterling,Coutinho and Sturridge are the only three established players that really offer that kind of energy ahead of him(by established I mean multiple seasons at the club). With all the upheaval last year I think it'd be a mistake to let a fairly decent, settled player go right now.His value isn't really going to drop over the next year or two anyway.

That description of his role sounds very similar to Michael Carrick btw,he's probably been the most ambivalent player Man Utd have had in terms of fans feelings about him over the years.Sounds like Allen might be your Carrick :-p

It's a good comparison in playing style, though Carrick is (or at least was) better.
He's been very useful to have as a squad player, but with it looking like Milner is coming, I'm not sure that the attributes Allen gives aren't also there in Milner (and to an extent Henderson and Can) to a higher level. What we could do with is a specialist DM, and if we're letting a midfielder go, Allen makes the most sense.

I think he'll thrive in a slightly smaller team though.

Well Barcelona are losing Xavi after the CL final.

They'll probably be on the phone for Joe Allen Monday morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,880 ✭✭✭✭klose

Zero chance Allen is off as long as Rodgers is here. Manager has a massive hard on for him as we are all aware and sees him as our best dm if you believe that newspaper report a week or so ago where it said Rodgers preferred Allen over Lucas at dm as Allen "offers more going forward" which really has no bearing on how you rate a defensive midfielder but anyways. Was always under the illusion Rodgers thought a pure dm was unnecessary for his team which looks to be the case.

Is it because he's free that some people arent excited for Milner.

I think hes a fantastic signing.

I think he would, they'd want to convert him into a centre-half and he's just not that kind of player.

Agreed ,,,, a lot of people thought Gary McAllister was a ridiculous signing too.

And he was 6 years older than Milner is!

What a gem of a transfer that was

Well benteke wants to play for a champions league club. So that will rule us out this year. Hopefully they will spend what they were willing to on him on someone else maybe more suited to us.

He has a great record. Prob end up as drogbas replacement..seems Costa wants back to athletico for some reason

    Afraid of Henderson.

If Milner does sign then why should we get rid of Allen? It's all about the squad not just the first eleven.

    Milner.

Whatever about his ability (which he has bags of imo) how can anyone be unhappy with signing a player on a free who has chosen first team regular football with a team like Liverpool over more wages and staying at a team like City. He's choosing regular playing time over wages and a better chance at trophies. That's a rare rare quality to have as a modern day footballer and he should be credited for that. It's a great attitude and that combined with his experience will be brilliant for Liverpool imo. It's a no brainer.

    If he signs of course.

Milner will probably sign for Arsenal now. Too much positivity over his expected transfer in here.

    Its never works for us!

On the figures I've seen from the sources I don't believe until it's confirmed it seems like a signing on fee of just over 6m with the same per year in wages over a 4 year contract, so around 31m in total. We definitely need improvement in the middle anyhow, so hopefully he will be the answer for us.

    Indeed.
People are very quick to forget that for our excellent spell this season Allen played half the games as Lucas was injured. Once or twice in a game against more physical players he looks to be dispensed with like a rag doll and that sticks in peoples minds, larger players get left for dead but that largely goes unnoticed.

Having the likes of Allen available to the squad is a good thing, madness to be getting rid. Especially if Lucas might fancy a move away again with Milner looking to be coming in.

Lucas, Henderson & Milner won't be starting too many games together and it's no doubt pretty obvious to Lucas that Henderson or Milner won't be sitting on the bench.

Ideally we need to keep Lucas and Allen while bringing in Milner and another midfielder. I don't think Lucas fancies another year as a bit part player though or a chap on standby for injuries and suspensions.

Will be interesting if he wants out, he was a great signing for them, hit the ground seemlessly and bagged goals. What you'd expect from an expensive striker but not what happens all the time, will be very difficult for Chelsea to replace him. Benteke to Chelsea :)

    Thanks.

He misses Pepe too I'd say :P

I'd say Chelsea won't have any intention of letting him go, they won't want him to anyway given the good season he had. He was injured for a lot of it too, imagine him fully fit.

Ambromovich will probably buy the sun and place it over London so Costa can have his weather and they can keep him.

Yeah not many players walk out of a first-team spot in a Mourinho team, will believe it when I see it.
What about some of the deadwood and 20 odd mill for Benteke?Sherwood managing Balotelli would be a joy to behold.

If he can knock our Origi out of the Belgium team, he can get his European football at the Euro's next year.

    European football his agent said.

If anyone wants him they will have to trigger his buy out clause. He's worth a lot more to villa so they are in no hurry to sell him.

I could see Chelsea buying him to be honest. Jose likes a strong aggressive centre forward.

It didn't really make sense that he let Lukaku go last year. I know he brought Drogba back but he had only one season left in him.

He could have Drogba's replacement ready and waiting but now he has to go back to the market. I know the money doesn't really matter to Chelsea.

would be delighted if he went to a CL club lol. Milner,Clyne & Ings for possibly under 20m is good business

    Already done that I believe.

Benteke is a very good footballer, but not right for how we try and play. He may well be worth 30m to someone, but that someone is not us. If we do end up buying Benteke (and I don't think we will) then it will only solidify the belief that this time next year (and possibly earlier) we will have a different manager. I think he'll survive this review unless he kicks up a stink about the restrictions placed on the budget/transfers by FSG, but I don't think that'll happen.

We got rid of Lukaku, well he wanted out for different reasons, so replacing him with an older, slightly inferior and more costly Benteke wouldnt make sense, I cant see Benteke wanting to warm the bench either.

Hinting at not settling in England..could be all bs

Straight swap with griezeman would suit both parties I'd imagine.

Yeah Benteke seems a bit similar to Lukaku in the sense that he wants to be the main man guaranteed to play at his club, the battle for places at Chelsea would do his head in I'd say.
Could Juve go for him?The Champions League money and a few ageing strikers make it seem reasonable.Llorente's getting on now,he'd be a suitable replacement.Him and Tevez both in their thirties now.

No chance. Juve are too smart to overpay for him & they have Tevez,Dybala,Morata,Llorente & Coman.

They've just sounded big money on Dybala no? He will have to leave England for CL football, I don't see any of the top 4 signing him right now. He'd be a good fit for Athletico but dunno if they could afford him.

Chelsea selling Lukaku was just good business. £28M for a rotation player allows Chelsea to meet FFP targets and reinvest the money into players that will definitely improve the first 11.

Those reports all stemmed from Marca who also claimed Courtois and Luis were unsettled and wanted to go back to Madrid.

The same article said Courtois Spainish GF wanted out of England, luckily for us shes Belgian.

If any Chelsea player leaves for Atletico its more than likely Luis.

I'd still hate for us to pay over the odds for Benteke, I'd take him at closer to 20m but not for 32m but Villa will look at the going rate and its probably what hes worth when you look at how much , Bony and Lukaku went for over the last 2 windows, whether someone will pay it is another matter.

100%, I dont think he was worth that price which would also mean Benteke, IMO, isnt worth 32m but Villa have something to compare Bentekes potential worth against in the Lukaku deal.

They just need someone willing to pay that is.

Villa were very smart for putting the 32 million release clause in the contract and maybe Benteke stupid for signing it. He's potentially priced himself out of a move.

I don't think any club will match that figure just to begin talks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,912 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Benteke is a very good footballer and his current worth in world football is £32m if Bony & Lukaku are anything to by.

I really hope we look around Europe because there are better strikers out there for £32m.

If he was for sale for £20m the problem is he would start a bidding war as the likes of CL teams would happily pay £20m for a guy to sit on the bench and that would drive his wages up more so than his price.

Lets just hope we shop around before we buy.
