Why not have an open draw at u21 level instead of provincial?

  • Registered Users Posts: 111 ✭✭The Slobs

It would serve as a test case for senior championships and woul be worth a go.

The Limerick half back line really give me cause for concern our Half forward line was the most disappointing line against Antrim.

But the biggest problem we have is we have started so frighin slow in every game it takes us nearly 15/20 Minutes to get up to speed in games Sometimes longer (offaly and Antrim). Wexford can not allow this to happen again on saturday as i dont see limerick allowing us back into it.

Our half-back line is our strongest imo, you'd fancy all to win their own personal battles most of the team and they work well in tandem too. If McDonald comes out to centre-forward, he could be a handful, but he's more of a goal threat inside obviously. The half-back line and the deep centre-back is allowed to flourish because of the work rate of the midfield, particularly the two Doon lads.

Wexford start slow, and Limerick have tended to start well. But Limerick have let teams back into it in every single game so far, pretty much every game we could have had a huge lead at half-time but have gone to sleep between 20-30 minutes and that is when Wexford have woken up. Not sure we can afford to do that again, we could be badly finished. Our 2nd half performances have all been brilliant too.

Agree with most of your assessment, but Ryan on Morrissey isn't a concern for me. He tends to cope fine with physical full forwards.

I'd be worried that Limerick may have devised a plan to bottle up Mac, and if they have I feel Wexford need another forward capable of carrying the can with scores from play. Don't think Sutton is reliable enough. Maybe someone like Sam Kelly getting a start?

Lynch is most likely to start full-forward, Morrissey seem to be favoured at centre-forward too. Lynch is also physical though, but Ryan is a quality hurler, I'd be expecting our own Ryan in the corner to cause a lot of trouble, think he'll grab a goal tbh.

From a Limerick perspective i'd have no fears whatsoever in any of our 1-7 i'd go as far as saying 3 of them should have started for the seniors this yr in my opinion i'd be a little worried about our forwards as some are very young and wexford have is it 9 from last years starting 15?so that'd be a worry for me

I don't have that fear. It's not like it's a load of 19-year-olds playing 25-year-olds. They're all U-21, they're all on the age grade bar a few of our subs... I don't see experience as being a factor really. The vast majority of our players have All-Ireland experience with the minors, and have that heartbreak behind them. We've only one player with senior Championship experience, but a good few have been on senior panels in the past and others have county intermediate experience.

I really really don't think the youth of our team could be seen as a disadvantage tbh. I don't really see any weakness in the Limerick team, there's no obvious one anyway. It's a very well-balanced team. Some have said that our forwards don't win enough ball but I would say it's as good a ball-winning forward team as we've ever had- a puckout is a back's ball, it favours backs, I wouldn't expect any forward to win a puckout time after time. They are well capable of winning ball though, and making it hard for backs, breaking it down, working hard and most importantly, they can all score.

I think we'll win. I think Wexford are a good side and will cause us problems but I think we have more strength throughout the panel and with Casey, Kelliher, the Flanagans, O'Callaghan and particularly ALTC; we do have strength on the bench. If Gillane & KOB can't get in with the form they've shown this year, that's impressive.

There were eight teams in the Leinster U21 hurling this year as it is and you want to add two more.

There are only five teams in muster so would not be better to add in two there

Ulster played there own championship so what happens the other ulster counties.

Why not put Galway in Ulster it would not be anymore unbalanced than the leinster senior football championship with Dublin running riot and with automatic home advantage for every match.

Exactly - so open draw it should be to have a fair balanced championship where all teams are treated equally!!!!

    Yep, I totally agree lads.
The GAA could try it for two years and see what it's like.

I think an open draw is flawed to be honest. I think there needs to be some sort of seeding. You could essentially have a weak team drawing a few other weak teams in succession and ending up in a semi final or even a final which would then turn into a non-event if they went up against a big team with everyone then bemoaning that structure. Equally you could have a series of big teams drawing each other early on and knocking each other out which wouldn't be healthy either.

pros and cons to any system. surely a weaker team would learn more from winning a game or two before meeting a strong team than getting beaten heavily in the first round?

Wexford have the experience and I think they might do it. If Limerick do win, mark my words it will be start of a conveyor belt of talent superior to Clare's. It's frightening how young they are, but I think it will stand against them.

This Wexford team is young too. 9 underage next year and 12 of the panel iirc including 2 full backs, 2 half backs, 1 midfield and 2 full forwards for sure.

Actually the funny thing is next years crop of under 21s are said to be wexfords most talented by a good bit ... The rumour is dunne got one more year as they wanted Jj Doyle to handle the u 21s next year and then step up

Interesting. They still be more senior to Limerick though who have about 8 that'll still be underage the year after.

  • Registered Users Posts: 822 ✭✭✭lim4ev

as far as i'm aware 4 of this team are overage next yr the whole hb line plus i'd guess the goalie, all the rest are underage next yr and about 8 of the panel the following yr again.

Limerick should win this 1 easily enough, hopefully Wex won't resort to getting dirty.

New puck out strategy needed for wexford. Limerick half back line cleaning up.

Is there an advantage rule in hurling? Terrible decision by the ref if there is one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭Very Bored

What was the Meath v Wicklow match like? I didn't realise it was on TG4. Looks like it was exciting from the score.

No, once he's blown he has to stop play. Situations like that would make a strong debate for having one though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭Very Bored

    yes and yes

I don't actually think there is. Perhaps I'm wrong but I am fairly sure once the referee blows to stop play he has to stop it.

Limerick are outstanding in the air. They have really dominated teams this year under the high ball.

ah yeah, once he blows play stops, but he never let play develop with the option of bringing it back for the free

Do you know that despite the huge number of hurling matches I watch I never realised he can let play develop and then bring it back. Shows how observant I am :D.

Ah where have you been Very Bored :) There is an advantage rule.

5 seconds of advantage can be played from when the foul has been committed.

If the ref blows the whistle, play has to be stopped. You can't keep 'playing' if the ref blows the whistle. That's the same for football, soccer, rugby etc.

Limerick are something else in the air but Wexford aren't doing themselves justice there either. They're not catching anything cleanly.

Did the advantage end when the shot was saved?

This is only the first year that there has been an advantage in hurling.

Limerick would want to take a few of their goal chances while on top

Their distribution is really poor, alot of lads are showing little composure on the ball and are hitting high into the Limerick hb line. Which is not what they should be doing. Limerick have a very talented attack no doubt.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭Very Bored

That's twice now that the referee has stopped goals without using the advantage then.

For all Limerick's domination, Wexford are not all that far behind. I don't think they'll be as bad in the second half either. A team that made bits of Kilkenny can't be this poor.

0-11 to 0-4 in favour of Limerick at ht. The scoreline could easily have read 2-14 to 1-4. Limerick by far the better team here.

no doubting Limericks class but from a neutral point of view its yet another disappointing game of hurling this year

Wexford are very poor, no defensive ability apart from hit the man, no forward play apart from lump it high, no such thing as a pass to man in a better position, poor first touch.

I think it shows how bad our (Kilkenny) U-21 setup is :(

As bad as our U21 set up is, and it has been bad the last two years, our players have a seriously physical and intense club championship to develop in, which has been brilliant for developing late bloomers, or giving lads playing on poor underage teams an environment to return to form.

In saying that, how we were utterly slaughtered by Wexford considering how poor they are makes you ask serious questions.

Disappointing maybe, but utterly predictable. Well done to those who took up my advice of Limerick @ 4/7, as I said it was a great bet. I said this would be easy. It was.

Page 36 of this thread gave me a great laugh.

Is that Conor McDonald lad overrated? His workrate is awful. Lets backs out too easy. Can any Wexford lads say how good he is in their county championship games?

Congratulations to Limerick. Thoroughly deserved. Not their fault that it wasn't the spectacle that could have been hoped for.

Really impressed by Limerick's fitness and work-rate. In reality the game was over inside 20 minutes. Limerick had set down the terms of the game and Wexford weren't able to match them for workrate or hurling. Wexford had a couple of good wins in 2013 at senior but their minors lost to Westmeath this year and their underage record has been poor for a long time. They are relying on this team to improve them. Its sad to see for a county with such a big hurling support. Great boost for Limerick. They needed this after their seniors poor season.
