as recently married, considering whether to add spouse to mortgage. is there any reasons why i should / should not do this. i assume we have to get solicitor involved. would this be like applying for new mortgage all over again? would life cover insurance increase much with 2 people instead of one on mortgage?

No advantage at all for either you or your spouse.
Take out life cover separately for your spouse if you wish.

Your spouse automatically acquires legal rights concerning the family home- adding them to the mortgage- doesn't matter one iota- however, often you will find in the terms of a mortgage that you have to inform the lender if your circumstances change. Getting married- is a notifiable change of circumstances (and it may also affect a lender's clear title to a property, or it may impact any loans secured against the property).
