Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,
Thinking of doing this course next year, it's early in the day but I'm opening up my options now. Anybody doing this or completed it? Does this help going the Pilot route? Any advice or tips on it would be appreciated, thanks!

    Hi Seanmul89,

Please see the message below from one of our students, Thomas Whelan. Thomas is going into his final year in Aviation Management here in DCU.

"Aviation Management is a brilliant course if you are thinking of doing it! I myself have just finished 3rd year and have learnt so much about the aviation and airline industry as a whole.

Firstly, the modules thought in the course are very relevant and interesting which helps when it comes to studying for exams. For example, I just completed a module called 'Aviation Business Management' and in this module we were put into groups of 7 and had to create our own start-up airline. It was an enjoyable assignment because we were able to decide what aircraft we would buy and what routes we would fly.

Another reason why I would recommend Aviation Management is the 4 to 6 month work placement it offers in 3rd year. You get the opportunity to get valuable work experience with an industry related job. Past aviation companies that have taken on students such as Aer Lingus, Cityjet, Stobart Air and many aircraft leasing companies. I myself got my work placement with Aer Lingus last Summer and it really helped me develop my professional skills which will help me acquire a job easier when I graduate. Also, don't worry about finding a job, DCU's INTRA office are responsible for finding work placements and advertising them to the students via a portal page, but it is always good to know a few contacts in the industry already!

With your question on the pilot route, yes it does help you become a pilot! In 4th year the option to specialise in Pilot Studies is available to you. You can go to Flight Training Europe (Jerez, Spain) or Oxford Aviation Academy (Oxford, UK). While the costs to train to become a pilot are very high, don't let this put you off. Just this year, two guys in my course got sponsored by Aer Lingus and Flybe to become pilots with them. Basically, these guys applied for the sponsorship programmes (commonly known as 'cadetships') offered by the airlines and would have went through a series of interviews and tests. Some of the modules they studied early in their degree will have helped them in the interview and testing process and as well as that, studying Aviation Management will have looked good on their original application when applying. Now, they will get most of the training costs covered by both airlines and will train to become pilots in 4th year as well as graduating from DCU with a degree!

Its an impressive course in a brilliant university so I would highly recommend it. Hope that helps!"

Hope the above helps and of course if you need to contact us for any further information please just give us a shout, we would be happy to help you where we can.

    Hi,
Great answer to my question, Thanks :).. Im highly thinking of it for next year, it was always my plan. I am however in Full time employment in the Defence Forces, and I just think I have done my part and time to move on, and due to contracts changing i think it is time to pursue another career.
Pilot was always the dream also, I have some hours completed flying in PPL stage.
What is the demand like for the course? Is the selection process hard for a mature student?
    Thanks again.
