Anybody else here have the Kildare retired S/O ?, I think number 3. I taught when he asked me about extinguishers I was finished. I think they took people as they came. They knew I was active front line emergency service so they focused on that and how I can use my skills in the DFB. It seems for people that come from a totally different background from the emergency services they grill you on fire related questions.

I visited North Strand and seen the TVR and two engines, ambulance was out in Donabate at the time !

I also visited the OBI, got a tour around, seen the BA room and got to feel/lift the BA set, and they are funking heavy as fook. Hazmat suits look like some futuristic sumo suit TBH.

Wanted to get out to Killbarrack as its a one pump station and HQ , but timeframe didn't allow it.

I was talking about stations and he asked about TRV and after that he stopped me and said "you have all that well covered and smiled" so took that as good sign

The more I think about the fire extinguisher question, I know I should take some of the blame but I have worked in two multinational companies and yet I don't know that stuff(one had a high public footfall), it should be basic and drilled into you. Imagine, if I paniced and used the wrong fire extinguisher and made things worse. Kinda sad really, yet my record says I have been fire trained !

Should be mandatory to be put on a course to know which ones are which and how to use one and get to use one. Or is this done and not done in my companies.

Yeah DFB guy was fairly happy with the ground work I put in for the role, he asked me what was different about TVR, I went with the board for the BA sets, looking at it now, he was looking for it has no ladders. Also never leaves the station only for tunnel calls.

Even if I don't get the role, the tours where impressive, some equipment on the trucks, never knew this but fire engines are fully kitted out ambulances just no place for patients.

Very surprised they asked somebody how they felt on the whole HSE/DFB dispute. That's a grenade of a question!

Same as "tell me about a time you had an argument with a colleague". You don't come out smelling of roses.

    I got that one

Who on the panel would have the most sway, surely the current Firefighter or D/O would? he'd be the one to say, yeah that's a fella or girl that I'd like to have working with me, the DCC one wouldn't have that knowledge

I am pretty sure I didn't get one question about flexibility and willingness to learn. I definitely did on the other 3 competencies.

In fairness seemed like a pretty simple interview from reading these posts. Prep is everything for it. Most slipped up on small questions I'm sure very very hard to cover everything. Bring on results. Process is a killer really is !

Best of luck to everyone for next week.

Wow that was a lot to read in The last couple pages. I think its fair to say the following

they wanted to see you had visited more than one station

You had knowledge of fire extinuishers

Wanted to know how you had prepared for the process

Threw out at least one unanswerable question to see if you would bull ****

Ask you questions on DFB to see if you did your homework on the current situation.

Ooh i was also asked if i was aware of any DFB fire prevention campagnes! Luckily YES! I read that they do a 3rd class program with scool children encouraging fire safety in the home and planning an escape route. Honestly my intervew went really well. If i dont get it i never will. Ill be sick but lets see what happens

    What age are you TJ?

I think anyone that has a trade will have an upper hand. I got asked a plumbing question because I mentioned it, thankfully I could answer it but I'm not a plumber. Hopefully that will look good along with my own trade and a management degree. I also mentioned I watched the fire-fighter documentary and I had to explain what areas of training was filmed.

32, was a carpenter until 2007 then retraied in hotels. Was in the AFS for 10 years and became an instructor in the AFS and began teaching classes of new recruits. I also worked for a private ambulance service for a few months with a qualification as an EMFR. Like i said if i dont get it this time its not gonna happen. I prepared like mad for the interview and spent weeks studying every spare moment. I spent 10 years building my CV and had just about given up on a recruitment. Went for it in 2007 but didnt get past aptitude because i didnt understand the process

If you don't get it , don't give up. If it's what you want do it youll get it eventually. Unlike the Garda theres no age limit.

Ahh i know BUT! This is about the last time i could handle the low starting salary. Im married and want to start a family. This about the last time the planets will allign for me. But like i said i did all i could in the interview im thrilled with my performance and the questions i got. What ever happens im proud of the interview i gave. It all boils down to how high the standards were and if i performed as well as they wanted

You seem like your in with a better shout that most of us as you can back up a good interview with plenty of experience needed for the role. I was told by someone in the station I visited that a lot of guys that came in to visit weren't prepared enough.

I wonder if many interviewees had previous experience of competency based interviews.

When I did a mock interview with Emergency services recruitment the guy on the interview panel told me he did 12 interviews that day four or five were good and the rest he had to stop early to "put them out of their misery"
He was a retired 3rd officer

Yeah i did a mock interview with a different company. It was a retired DFB D/O, HR person and a retired Garda Supt. In my debrief i was told if i perfored like that on the day i was sure of a job. But i was paying him so i took it with a pinch of salt!!

Ha ha! Well they are hardly gonna tell us we are bad when we are footing the bill!!

Im always amazed how many people are prepared to offer a service to "give you the edge" id love to know the ratios of success stories with these companies,

In fairness I did nail the mock they just told me to brush up on my stations and equipment which I did, but other than that said I would do excellently at interview, just hope that offaly blokes curve balls didn't make a balls of it for me,

That was in the Morgan in Temple Bar yeah?, you must have been there the same night as myself Friday 6-10pm

I didnt make the friday but yes the same course. I was told the same. Brush up on daily roles in the station. I went stright to a another station afterwards for another tour! Did 3 stations in total and 4 tours!! The course did me no harm and i did get some decent feedback

I did that course in Temple Bar too, I was surprised to see that there was only ~45 on it. How were other people preparing? The mock interview was the best thing I did to prepare.

went in, told them I had a gorse fire fighting course done.

    Signed up then and there!

In reality, had a shocking interview. Answered all the questions and then got asked "How long does it take to train to be a firefghter"

... didnt know! ha shockingly bad! After that I knew i was f*cked. My own fault.

Also got asked my proudest achievement.
    Fire prevention plan in work.
Alot of stress management related questions.
Did I visit a station? why not?

So all and all. my verdict : unsuccessful!

Best of luck to everyone else tho!

Not knowing one question doesn't throw your whole interview off

Your man says to me, Did ya visit any stations, or did ya even bother? Lol

When I rattled them off I could see a little smirk on his face

Of course it does not, but not knowing a simple answer like that screams to the interviewers that I was not prepared.

That combined with my age 23,( A young looking 23 I am told ;) ) doesnt come across as DFB material.
