Building a house extension at moment
    Original Garden was 30 m.
After extension garden is 24 m.
Want to build a paving patio for BBQ and table and chairs for 4 using Kilsaran products.
    What size patio is needed?

Issue is that garden is approx 8 inches higher than rear of extension.
Currently 2.5 m trench at rear of extension which is level with house. Then a step of 8 inches to garden. Garden is 8 m wide and 2.5 m trench is width of garden

Can't really dig out any more garden to extend 2.5 m trench out further due to cost implications of getting digger back on site.

    How to handle this step?
One suggestion is to have two levels of patio.
But don't want to go too far back and eat up more of garden.
And don't want too much paving either becoming 'sea' of paving.

    Any advice appreciated

I would avoid putting any step in the space, already small and a step or split level will only fragment the space more.

For sites with sloping ground towards the house, the best and most effective solution is to install a storm channel across the full width with underground pipework connecting to a nearby gulley, AJ or Manhole. (A soakage pit is also a possibility, but it is a clumsy solution especially given the site size and characteristics.

Patio areas in my opinion are rarely useful if the dimension is less than 3.5m (ideally 4.0m +) but it will depend on number of users etc

Split level is really your only option if you don't want to do any more soil moving, and would look well and give another dimension to the garden. (Unless you want to manually dig out another 1m or more strip!)

Your 2.5m deep area could be for the bbq and some pots, maybe some 'relaxing' furniture and the upper level can be for your dining set. This area could still be pretty deep and still leave loads of garden space. Even if this area was 3.5m deep then your total paved area us only a quarter of the whole, which sounds about right. This upper area need not be rectangular either.

As I say, if you can't move more soil you're stuck with a split level patio or too small a patio!

Any chance of a photo or two?
