Car insurance query

I am moving to UK for work and have to get car insured, the comparison web site is quoting 1366. As cheapest, I only pay 400 here. Is this normal for English insurance? Any help would be great😁

    Sounds a bit high alright.
How many years experience did you mention? Did you include all your years driving in Ireland? Did you set the excess too low?

Try Pivilege, I've been with them since I moved over.

That sounds really high. My insurance is 463 for the year and I've only got a provisional licence but when I used the comparison websites it was coming to about 900 +. I'm with Admiral.Maybe try calling them directly?

Yeah mine is around 440 too, driving a crossover.
Admiral and Aviva might be options but you wont see them on comparison sites. For 15 years clean you'd want it drastically lower.

Pretty sure Admiral are on at least one of the websites? Also Diamond and Elephant are basically Admiral in disguise. I have been with Admiral for 3 years, I have usually got my renewal through, and then compared it and found either diamond or elephant being lower, I just ring up Admiral and tell them their sister company is quoting me lower via whatever website it is and they matched it.

Other things to effect price is your post code, do you know exactly where you will be living? This can drastically alter your price. I am in a high risk postcode, and even though i have underground secure car park it still keeps my price up

Also have you anyone "clean" to add as a name driver? (you mentioned your sister with the 6 points, she may not be the best!) but perhaps your partner or housemate? This can sometimes bring down the price!! My partner is named on mine and it reduced it by £40 even though she has never driven my car, but at least if she needs to she will be covered.

You're right about Admiral, just recalled I not only saw them but noticed they offered lower than my Privilege renewal.

You could of course also try a good old fashioned broker in the local area to where you are moving. If you get them on the right morning they may be able to do the donkey work for you and know what insurance will be best for your local area.

Its painful, I was nailed because my 4 years Irish NCB had "expired" because I hadnt driven in 5 years, so I more or less was treated as a first time driver when I got my first car....I got completly shafted for my first years insurance but it has halved in price after 2 years. Its still in the 4/500£ mark for a 1.0l car but its one of those things that I cant do without so you just have to take what you can get.

I moved over about 2 years ago. I think the main factor that effects it is the time resident in the UK part. Some postcode areas are heavily loaded too so that could play a factor. I'm also paying a lot more here than I was in Ireland on similar car. The license doesn't make a huge difference in my experience.

Lots of the insurers over here also won't take Irish NCB. I tried quite a few, the main one I would recommend is Adrian Flux -- https://www.adrianflux.co.uk. No problem with the Irish NCB and very knowledgeable/helpful if you give them a call.

    Hi everyone,

Was literally about to ask this question! I have a few extra queries as well if anyone was able to help me:

Do I need to get an MOT before I can register the car? (It's NCT'd til the end of February)
And I'm assuming I register the car in the UK before I can get insurance?

I'd imagine you would need to register it and MOT it, otherwise they'd have no knowledge of a) the car and b) general condition.
Might be worthwhile ringing a few first and asking them direct as I'd imagine comparision sites might struggle to recognise the new plate (I could be completely wrong on that).
