Worm tablets and Flea Spot On

Hi all,

I've two dogs weighing circa 20KG's each. I went to get worm tablets and flea spot on for them this morning and 4 X 10KG Drontal tablets + 3 applications of Flea spot on came to €39 in my local pet store which I think is very expensive.

Where do dog owners here generally source their worm tablets and flea spot on from? Are there generic / unbranded versions available anywhere online such as Amazon, eBay and specialist pet websites?

If generic drugs are good enough for my own medication I'm sure they'll be good enough for my beloved dogs!!!

Dealz do a flea spot on thing for €1.49. So far so good with my dog anyway.

If not then I wouldn't be inclined to treat them.

I always get my wormers from the vet and same as with a flea treatment if it's required. I've heard too many horror stories about the supermarket brand stuff.

No, I don't think they have. They aren't itching or anything like that and we haven't seen any when brushing their coats etc.

The vet I go to also sells the same brand of wormer as the local pet shop and similar price. I can't believe a single worm dose for each dog costs €12!!

Given I'll be using 2 tablets X 2 dogs X 4 times a year = 16 tablets per annum I can pay Amazon €48 or my local shop €96.

€48 in my pocket I think!!

2 ideas for you :
Check if you'll save anything by buying the bigger tablet and halving it
Check vetuk.co.uk as they sell equivalents for cheaper Unless you want to be loyal to the Drontal brand lol (it's probably cheaper on vetuk anyways)!! :pac:

Funny you should say that. I'm on XXX medication 20mg a day but I get the 40mg packs from my chemist as they are virtually the same price as the 20mg packs so a 28 day set of 40mg tablets are split in two and do me 56 days thus halving my personal medication cost.

€24 for a years supply of worm tablets. I just paid €24 for one dose which will do them for 3 months.

No brainer for me. I'll be ordering the bulk pack and that's me sorted for a few years.

Apologies for dragging up such an older thread. Just a quick question....do these tablets expire? I'm thinking of bulk ordering from the link below ..which would do my two dogs for 3 1/2 years but concerned about the expiry on these tablets

Honestly can't remember what the shelf life is, IIRC it's quite long.

Beware of customs and VAT etc now if ordering from the UK.

I always wonder about this-how can you be sure prescription is divided equally in the tablet?

We pay €12 every 4 weeks for spot on for my adult cat at the vets recommendation. Should we not give it to him?

€24 for a years supply if you buy online of €144 if you buy ever 4 weeks at your local vet.

It's up to you.

If you like giving €120 a year unnecessarily to your vet crack on.

I am happy to pay my local vet where he/she adds value by being a vet, not by being an inefficient and expensive retailer.

It is.
The medicine would be added to the other constituents and then thoroughly mixed. If it wasn't one table could vary from the next.
The medicine isn't added after the table shape is formed.

I worm my dogs twice a year i never have to flea then as they have no fleas. i notice that new owners are encouraged to get treatments every other month this i think is a gross over sell to unknown new owners and its wrong a lot of unnecessary chemicals on the dogs too often.

I dont understand this at all have had dogs living in my home for the last 50 years they have come & gone and never got fleas. Fleas are usually on dogs who have to live in filth like on hard stands in dirty barrels etc you know whom i am referring to .

Any rescued lurcher or toy dog from that element are usually covered in fleas due to lack of hygiene same with puppy farm dogs. Once they get an initial treatment and wash and if they live in the home then you can cut out a monthly flea treatment and go bi annually. Has worked for me with all the different breeds i have owned.

( JUST MY OPINION AS AN EXPERIENCED DOG OWNER)
