You can put "it" on your laptop and use that as your guide to figuring out how things work and trying new things on it. It's also easier to fix if you make any mistakes or screw things up. That's how most people do it, including myself. Just a money saving tip for you.... ;)

This is exactly how I got into it.

True, but on my dumb TV, I'm using a lot more Android apps than 'it' alone.. Netflix, Spotify etc have smartened my crap TV no end, so I consider my 50 quid box huge value for money :)

Well, I'd counter that by saying that you clearly didn't do your research properly and that the people you spoke to know nothing because (a) that box is not an android box (b) isn't capabale of doing a fraction of the things a good android box can and (c) isn't a patch on an android box in general.

Look I'm not exactly a tech head, actually far from it, Android box, satellite box, call them what u wish, what I was looking for was something to replace Sky and to be able to record, pause, rewind. I am after getting the said box in question on trial for a few days. So far I am delighted with it, does everything sky does and a lot more. I'm actually ready to get 2 more of these.

I got the nexbox a95x, only had a little time to explore it but so far, I'm very impressed. Google is helping me find out more about it! Great value for money.

If you keep posting things like that, you're ready to get a ban as well if you keep ignoring the illegal discussion warning in the thread title. Just saying... ;)

Anyway, as was pointed out to you before by other posters (not just me) you clearly are in the wrong forum. Also, if I was going to be spending the amount of cash that you are, I'd bloody well want to know exactly what I was buying!!

P.S. I'm far from a tech head either, quite the technophobe at times to be honest! :D

Netflix?? Seriously?? I tend to use mine for "it" and it only - a lot of apps that are widely mentioned elsewhere are full of pop up ads, viruses and the like that can wreck the box (yet people still use them and wonder why they end up having problems! :() . So, I err on the safe side of caution. Besides, there's no need for them as they are available in the main use for this box. :)

Last thing I'll say on this but be very wary buying those Zgemma boxes.
Go to the foreign satellite forum and look there.
They are cheap ( I'm guessing you paying about 70 -80 quid) but not worth the hassle.
PM me if you like .

Absolutely - Netflix costs me nothing - I'm on my bro's package, and it's a great service if you just want to press play without looking for 'sources' that take time, and can be hit and miss in terms of quality..

If I just wanted to run 'it' I'd have flashed my box with Libreelec - I love having insta YouTube, Spotify etc - that's why Android boxes are great imo (and also why I prefer running Android phone rather than Android TV, which, as far as I can tell, restricts the amount of apps you can access in the App Store, and for some apps, gives apps with less functionality)
    - e.g. the Spotify app on my smrt TV is a bit of a pain compared to the phone Spotify app - I can only access my own and recommended playlists and not my list of saved artists for example..

I'd agree with the poster who said that you got royally screwed. Also, you've paid a fortune for something that will be obsolete in less than two years as the company you are getting your channels from will be removing that technology. They've started already in other countries. Google it for more info. A good android box will cost you a lot less and last you a lot longer. Just saying.... ;)

That's fair enough, if you're getting Netflix for free. You know that there are few tips and tricks to help speed up your viewing (seeing as you are so impatient :P) and the quality of your sources, don't you? If you have your set up right, Netflix will look like yesterdays news... ;)

Have a few options to think about on deciding what box to get for my room, Currently have a mXQ box and it's simply put crap.

Tempted to get the new nvidia shield due out very soon, On the other hand would probably get a good deal on the last gen shields. Not too fussed about gaming on the shield as I have a steam link + use an Amd card so might be a tad overkill for that.
Haven't used a minix before but people on here mentioning the U9 coming out soon so might be worthwhile waiting for that? Decisions Decisions

He has over paid but the rest is l rubbish. Even if the service goes on these h2s boxes an iptv service can easily be added to this box. So the service you talking about might be gone but the box will not be obsolete. BTW, even if he only gets 2 years out of it he's still saved a fortune over the regular service.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,553 ✭✭✭✭Copper_pipe

Too many people still using the old boxes and not availing of HD yet. Can't see sky moving everyone to HD and giving them a free HD box as twud cost a fortune. The Zgemma will be safe for another 2 years anyway id say.

The old shield is more expensive than the new one as there's very few of them available. They shot up in price when stocks dropped.

I'd always say to anyone thinking about going down this route is if you only knock 6-8 months out of it you are near breaking even and are still let with a good free to air box/IPTV/KODI.

It will take a long time before these are obsolete I got my first one in 2011 and was told then I'd be lucky to get a year out of it

Better off discussing Enigma 2 here

What kind of apps are you superusers running on there Android Boxes?

Is it Netflix, YouTube type stuff? As far as I have heard Netflix does not run in HD on these boxes as they are not certified, is that correct?

I have heard of Kodi and the ability to stream TV channels through the box also, where could one find out more information on this as I presume it's not allowed to be discussed here.

The Nvidia Shield will run 4K HDR content from numerous sources... There are other boxes that will run high quality... The best thing is to identify your needs before identifying a box/type of box... Some people are streaming local content, music services, home videos, paying games from local or cloud based services, running AI, managing their home automation, sending emails, viewing porn.

Figure out what you need to do & go from there... a quality box can cost anything from 50-250 euros, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the 50e box.

There's not much to PM about. If you want a definite device that will get continued support and can do all that is quoted in the first sentence from @Bluefoam........The Nvidia Shield is the Number 1 box/device currently available and has the license/certification for Netflix HD/4K/HDR playback.
You can also sideload most other apps or download directly from the Play Store or other alternatives.
Regarding Kodi......Kodi will run vanilla(bare installation) on most devices and the important thing here.....Is that it's media center software/a multimedia player. This will allow you stream YOUR Content locally, via your home network, via your satellite feeds, terrestrial feeds(both need to be configured and setup using the likes of TVHeadend & possible compatible USB Tuners -DVB T2/DVB S2/Cable.....the info can be found in the link to TVHeadend. But this is something I'd leave till you fully understand what Kodi/SPMC are.Takes a bit of tinkering to get it right, but a nice project if you like a challenge.

If you are looking for other information(the kind you can't discuss here) on Kodi. The internet is awash with sites and tutorials for this stuff. But here is not the place(including PM's or DM's) full stop.

Now back to Android boxes.....So if you want something that can handle all this Android wise....The Shield is currently Number 1 (can be overkill for some that don't use all it's features). But it's the most supported and handles everything thrown at it.
With other boxes,if you want to go cheap.......don't expect anything amazing or long lasting. There are plenty of decent priced boxes out there. But for me I'd stick to the more reputable ones that get plenty of official or 3rd party support.
The likes of the newer Minix boxes,Amazon devices,Tronsmart are ones I'd consider for longevity and ongoing support.
The problem with most of the cheap S905/S912 current boxes is they are either poorly constructed and suffer from issues like poor heat conduction/transfer and leading to poor performance and breakage due to circuts melting. Also the components can be of very poor quality i.e. wifi antenna, flash storage etc, etc.
Anyway that's my small input on this.I know I'll be probably shot down by some of the "Cheap Brigade" ;) But it seems people are overthinking this stuff.

An excellent post there Bazz, fair play! :D

The only problem I've ever heard in relation to the Shield is that the picture ratio cannot be adjusted in certain programmes. Apart from that, it's widely rated as the best box on the market, followed very closely by the Minix.

As regards content, we're veering into dodgy terrority so you are definitely right to check out Google as that information is very easily found there.

Oh, and let the "cheap brigade" take their best shot - I've got your back... :P
