If Joseph had given Sir Isaac Newton the ride that Ryan did there'd have been a page or two of abuse posted about it by now.

In fairness he was pulling the arms out of him for the first two furlongs and then was completely blocked off in the last furlong

Seething with newton blocked off all over the place when tanking

A shocking run from Ivawood, Hannon's team look to be out of form after a flying start to the season. Bit of a worry that Weld might be in the same category.

Totally agree. Should have at least been placed. Yes he pulled hard early but there was so much left in the tank.
As for Hughes, hes been giving up for weeks now. Looks like his apetite has already gone

True, but Joseph ( who I'll never forgive for making a complete balls of Australia's Irish Champion stakes ) would have received no such understanding if he'd been in the saddle today.

Ryan didn't exactly cover himself in glory, he looked like he didn't try to make a gap today.

Hard to know what to make of such a performance, the horse looked like he's a hard ride and needs more than 7f on pedigree anyway. Moral winner who'll improve or a monkey of a horse?

I'd suggest monkey, that head carriage of his very off putting, keeps plenty for himself

Acapulco being backed off the boards, will she last it out? I prefer Cry ME A River as a closer, great run against the colts first time up

The size of that filly. Easton Angel has won her race by a mile, so that is some performance by the winner, and her. Would have liked to see them race against each other.

Get in. Not the best ride by Smullen there I thought, but what a classy classy animal.

Ya definitely. My pocket is certainly talking here but a combination of his temperament and an unlucky run beat the grey Gatsby there. Still nice to see another Irish trainer bag the feature race.

Fantastic race though, best of the meeting so far for me.

I'd be putting my foot through the telly if I'd backed tgg

That was unreal Gatsby is a good few pounds clear on that run.. I mean nothing wrong with it but that must have been frustrating for Spencer ( in fairness he had him handy all the way so not your usual coming too late display from him there)

Wouldn't necessarily say that. That was Free Eagles first run in 9months so he's sure to come on a tonne.

Gatsby the best horse on the day no more. Free Eagles first run for 242 days and PJ pulled the trigger on him a bit too soon imo.

Well on the day I think The Grey Gatsby was the better horse and would have won by a length or two if he'd have got out in time. No pocket talking from me as I was on Western Hymn, just think TGG was incredibly unlucky not to win that. Free Eagle should come on a load for that run, the rematch would be very interesting.

    Two picks for me:

3.05: Acapulco - know absolutely nothing about this animal but with Ward stating that she's the best workhorse he's ever on grass she's got to be worth a bet at 5/1 with Moore on board.

4.20: Wasn't planning on backing Free Eagle but struggling to see what beats him. Think The Grey Gatsby is vulnerable to a horse with a turn of foot, also unproven at Ascot, and while Ectot went off at 6/1 for last seasons Arc and has to be respected, he like FE is out for the first time, I think FE's course form in Champion Stakes on softer than ideal last season and Welds ability to get them fit fto makes him value at 3/1.

    Singles & Double

Two picks, two winners and a 23/1 double, happy feckin days!

Now to follow Aidan's picks in the Hunt Cup.

Im not sure, on that ground i certainly favour tgg, only thing is there's a strong possibility it'll be difficult to get him to the track again.

You're dead right, TGG was the best animal today and should have won. Just wouldn't be quick to pick between them in a rematch given FE's scope for improvement.

True, remarkable performance for his 5th start.

Perfect ride, he was in the right place all through the race. A very tactical ride and it paid off

That was a really messy race too which I don't think would of suited him, Smullen had to kick on a bit earlier than he would of liked on him and that's not ideal on a horse having his first run for 9 months.

I wouldn't say perfect. Only for a bit of luck he was getting nailed in the last 50 yards. He said it himself he went a bit earlier than he wanted. I'll let him away with it seen as he held on :pac:

I'll go with Sulaalaat ew in the last @ 16/1. Steps up in trip. Hopefully be thereabouts come the line.

Gabriel and Speculative Bid next for me

They didn't go a hectic gallop and Free Eagle would have probably liked more of a tow into the race. Pat had to kick when he did. Free Eagle will probably end up a 12 furlong horse so to win in such a steadily run 10 furling Group 1 after so long off the track is impressive. He's so lightly raced for a 4yo so there is surely a lot of improvement to come in him.

Have 3 in this, temptress American hope and have spark plug in a speculative double with free eagle. If that comes in I won't be going to work tonight
