Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. The longest day of the year, what you all doing for it?

For me, the next few days are far more important to me than the soulless, prescriptive, money splurging orgy that is Christmas. But the Summer solstice doesn't seem to hold much traction for the majority on our Island, which is a shame, because our Island once held this seasonal event in great esteem and importance. I celebrate it anyways, normally on my own, but this year me and a few lads on a stag party are going out to one of the Islands off the west coast to drink, listen to music, look at the sky and enjoy ourselves on this great yearly event in the middle of our summer. Going to be good weather too for these outside shenanigans. Any plans yourselves?

I'm going to try and watch every James Bond film in one day.

It has failed on previous days, but if my figures are sound, it just might work this time.

I'll report back here if it works.

Presumably you'll be stealing the drink, swimming to the island and sleeping in a field to avoid the prescriptive, orgiastic splurging of money.

It's still a big thing they celebrate in Scandinavian countries.

I've already stole the drink, acquired a floatation vessel, all I need is a tarp/tent like structure to store these essentials plus ourselves. Splurging of money can't happen on a island with no actual building let alone a ATM machine

Yeah, there's some festival where they burn a full reconstruction of a longboat? Would love to go to it

Oh I know but it's a national holiday in the likes of Finland and Sweden and there's much more fanfare about it with parties and festivals happening.

Midsummer's Night Eve was always one of the biggest nights of the year for kids in Connacht.

There's a thread on here every year on 20th June, "I just moved to Ros/Galway/Sligo/Mayo, why are there fires everywhere? "

I will be doing something to mark it. It is Father's day too. So obviously also part of the day is for dad.

It is a ' thing ' for me.

I'm going to head to the stone circle at Grange for sunrise tomorrow. I love the solstice :)

Last year I was at my best friend's wedding. I can't believe it's almost a year later. That was a great wedding.

That sounds great I will be doing something in nature but that is such a lovely place. Or Tara. Although there does tend to be a lot of people there at these times.

I hope you have a lovely time :)

Thank you. I truly hope the weather is a bit more congenial tomorrow though. Very misty and wet here now. I went to Grange for the "eclipse" there a couple of months ago :pac: We caught a few glimpses of it anyway. :)

Grange Co. Limerick that is! Not Newgrange unfortunately. I feckin' love Grange stone circle. There's a healing stone that many people swear by and the main stone Crom Dubh confuses compasses. There was a guy there demonstrating the day of the eclipse. It was magical.

Looking forward to bonfire night on the 23rd! Although not as big a night as it used to be I'll still build a fire and raise a glass or two to nature - like the op, watch the sunset fade and the stars come out above the burning embers.

Newgrange is all about the winter solstice West and Northwest gets the summer one.

Going to the local Hallmark to check if they have any cards for this glorious occasion.

I'll probably sent out a chain text to all my contacts wishing them a Happy Longest Day of the Year.

Ever been to Yeats summer house in Thoor, Ballylee near Gort, Co.Galway? A class Norman built castle circa 1200, He wrote "The Winding Stair" while living there and you can actually climb that winding tower house stone staircase if you go visit as its a interpretative centre now. A beautiful spot, right beside a river that flows beside it

    I make cards . Not many ...

New Year's resolutions don't last. Midwinter is one of the most difficult times of year to forge new beginnings and change habits. It feels charged to me. In many ways.

    Happy Litha!

The king's taken back the throne
    The useless seed is sown
When they say they're cutting off the phone
I'll tell 'em you're not home

    No place to hide
You were fighting as a soldier on their side
You're still a soldier in your mind
    Though nothing's on the line

You say it's money that we need
As if we're only mouths to feed
I know no matter what you say
There are some debts you'll never pay

    Working for the church
    While your family dies
You take what they give you
    And you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love
    Will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

    I can taste the fear
Gonna lift me up and take me out of here
Don't wanna fight, don't wanna die
    Just wanna hear you cry

Who's gonna throw the very first stone?
Oh! Who's gonna reset the bone?
Walking with your head in a sling
    Wanna hear the soldier sing

    Working for the Church
    While my family dies
    Your little baby sister's
    Gonna lose her mind
Every spark of friendship and love
    Will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

    I can taste your fear
It's gonna lift you up and take you out of here
And the bone shall never heal
I care not if you kneel

    We can't find you now
But they're gonna get their money back somehow
    And when you finally disappear
We'll just say that you were never here

    Been working for the church
    While your life falls apart
Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart
Every spark of friendship and love
    Will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

Organized religion is not the same as spirituality. Those are still words to be considered though.

The solstice is a very free celebration it can even be for atheists and have a humanistic meaning. It's acknowledging the seasons and nature.

Can you explain what you mean or the words do more?

I mean it's not a cult. It's not about control over anyone.

    Great lyrics though Catallus.

    "Careless Whisper"

    I Feel So Unsure
    As I take your hand
And lead you to the dance floor
    As the music dies
    Something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen
    And all it's sad goodbyes

    I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
    Though it's easy to pretend
    I know you're not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I've been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you

    Time can never mend
The careless whisper of a good friend
    To the heart and mind
    Ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
    Pain is all you'll find

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
    Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now who's gonna dance with me
    Please stay

    Now that you've gone
    Now that you've gone
    Now that you've gone
Was what I did so wrong
So wrong that you had to leave me alone

I lost myself on a cool damp night
Gave myself in that misty light
Was hypnotized by a strange delight
    Under a lilac tree
I made wine from the lilac tree
Put my heart in its recipe
It makes me see what I want to see
and be what I want to be
When I think more than I want to think
Do things I never should do
I drink much more that I ought to drink
Because it brings me back you...

Lilac wine is sweet and heady, like my love
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady, like my love
Listen to me... I cannot see clearly
Isn't that she coming to me neeeeeeeeeeeeeearly here?
Lilac wine is sweet and heady where's my love?
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady, where's my love?
Listen to me, why is everything so hazy?
Isn't that she, or am I just going crazy, dear?
Lilac Wine, I feel unready for my love...
