The McGraths reserve tea in the black box seems to be gone. Replaced by a Diplomat tea - anyone try it?
Not sure whether to switch to it or try the McGraths Gold?

Were they the Specially Selected or anything? Bought the regular cod ones last week from the fridge section-they were awful, really runny inside and just not a nice texture at all. Used to buy them all the time and liked them so they must have changed those ones!

No they were in a clear plastic pack with light blue label - northern catch I think?

The vegetable biryani pots are really good. They've the same ones in Dunnes but double the price.

I do all of my grocery shopping in Aldi with the exception of coffee. As a former chef I tend to stick to 'basics' (i.e. I cook ;) ) so can't comment on their ready meals with the exception of their curries which I believe are superior to either Marks or Tescos.

At the moment I am happily eating my way through Rosamund Grant's Taste of the Caribbean cookbook using only Aldi bought products and enjoying some seriously good food every night at an average cost of a fiver for two people.

I was about to say I buy carrots, celery and onions!

I have heard people say the fruit and veg doesn't last long but I haven't noticed, gets used up before it goes off.

The meat is A1, thinking specifically about the rib eye steaks in the black packs and the free range chick fillets. Also the full chicken that you roast in the bag is great. I don't like their sauces for curries etc, would usually get Patek curry pastes elsewhere. Their pasta/noodles are grand however the rice is meh.

Wines are grand, there's a persecco there with a yellow label herself likes. Beer is beer in my opinion so no fuss there. All the cleaning products are same same as far as I can see, the fire logs arent as good as the Bord na Mona ones but who cares.

First they came for the socialists...

I noticed this yesterday. Bought the gold blend but haven't tried it yet.

UPDATE: All my cups of tea today have been horrible. I can't say for certain it's the fault of the red box tea bags but it's a bit too much of a coincidence for my liking.

I’ve been on holiday and missed the heatwave and now I’m going to return to ****e tea as well ??????
    Dear God why :(
    Maybe they are just repackaging?

I don't think Robert Roberts are producing the McGrath's tea for them any more.

Oh no ! That was the best tea.
Have a red box in the press unopened i was suspicious they had changed supplier and disappointed they felt the need to copy Barry's boxes. I think it makes their products seem inferior as they need to copy others instead of continuing with their own strong branding on the old boxes.

They've discontinued the ones in the little earthenware jars :(

Also, can I just NOT recommend the sweet potato wedges. OMG, they were absolutely VILE! Mr Crumble picked them up during the week (instead of the sweet potato FRIES I normally get) The remains of the packet went straight in the bin.

Speaking of binning things, I presume everyone has seen the recall on some of the frozen food (also from Tesco and Iceland) due to 9 deaths across Europe caused by listeria?

Saw the new boxes of Gold tea where the Reserve used to be. So are we saying it’s not as good? Will probably switch to Barry’s Red if not....

That's Lidl not Aldi according to the FSAI website.

And it’s 9 deaths in the last 4 years (across Europe)

It seems to be just Lidl here but it's Aldi in the UK as well.
Apologies. I didn't realise those deaths were across a period of time.
I had some sweetcorn and mixed veg that I've binned anyway. No point in taking the risk for the sake of a few euro.

I don't think we have a review in yet on the Diplomat Gold Blend, I think someone tried the McGraths Gold Blend in the red box and wasn't impressed.

There's not much of a risk if you cook the stuff properly. Listeria don't survive cooking.
I noticed, however, that the majority of the recall relates to steam bags/pods. Chucking the stuff into the microwave doesn't guarantee that everything is heated through and that is where the danger lies.

The Belmont Biscuits Wafer bars are lovely- just like Pink Snacks.

I had the McGraths red box tea and was not impressed BUT I forgot I'd poured a cuppa yesterday and left it a few minutes longer than usual and it was grand. Been doing that since and I can't complain.

Diplomat was always good, any McGraths was never nice

Picked up a two-pack of these tiramisu desserts; at only €1.39 I didn't think they'd be much but figured I'd try them.
    Well holy God, Biddy.
    They were AMAZING.

The sponge base was soaked in Marsala wine, which was delicious, the mascarpone was divine and the coffee flavours were to die for.
    A firm favourite for sure!
They also had profiteroles and a sticky toffee pudding one I think.

Their salad pots beat Lidl's hands down.
As does their hot smoked salmon.

I always wondered; in what way is it hot?
    Is it spicy?

I think it means that it's cooked with heat, as opposed to cold smoked salmon which is not really cooked as such, so has a slimier texture (ugh!)

The twin pack sticky toffee puddings are nice, but the bigger one that looks more like a cake, I found it to be a bit dry.
Nothing beats the lava cakes though.
So disappointed that they've discontinued the little desserts in the earthenware pots. The salted one in particular was lovely :(

I quite liked the bigger pudding and it is great value. It had loads of toffee sauce.
