I got a specially selected ginger cake recently.
It came in a brown paper type box. The nicest ginger cake I have eaten, moist and full of flavour.

I’ve never tasted a ginger cake, would the taste be similar to eating a ginger biscuit?

    This is the usual recipe.

    Love Ginger cake.

Just had some of the socially selected toffee pudding. Heated with a bit of their raspberry ripple ice cream. Heaven.

The chili cheddar is excellent. Had it with garlic bread and crisps for lunch today.

Roasted one of their in the bag chickens today, it was draped in streaky bacon, and had a black pudding and brown treacle bread stuffing.

Served it with mashed and roast spuds, broccoli and carrots and some chicken gravy and it was absafcukinloutely delicious.

    Highly recommended.

I am waiting for their socially awkward puddings.

My current go-to quick meal is those tortellini with the stir-in tomato and mascarpone sauce with lots of parmesan and some crispy bacon if I have it. Cheap, quick and soooo tasty!!
    (Wine is a bonus!)

Where would I find this stir-in sauce, please? Is it in the chilled food area or in a jar?

It is with all the other pasta sauces and pasta products, not chilled, just on the shelves. My wife has a soft spot for this, and it's brother, which is the chargrilled pepper one.

They do a lovely tomato and mascarpone stir in sauce in the chilled section too. So handy to have with that fresh tortellini. Big fan!

I love the tomato and mascarpone sauce. Mr Crumble won't touch it because "Ugh, it looks like baby vomit"!

Stir-in sauces (particularly cheesy ones) tend to be eye-wateringly high in calories. Just something to be aware of if you're watching your weight.

Anyone recommend something similar to Guinness? It's for cooking with so doesn't need to be exact match.

Any of the Irish stouts will be relatively similar for cooking.

Just tried a bottle of their alcohol-free lager (well, technically 0.5). Not bad at all.

Wouldn't be a fan of lagers so unlikely to try the Guinness one unless I've no other choice on a night out.

Do like Erdinger/Pauleaner non alcoholics so do drink them on when I'm driving. Even if I am on a proper session I'll often have one or two just to cut back a bit and save the head in the morning. It is missing the depth of a full leaded weiss beer but still tastes pretty good. Certainly a lot better than your average mass produced lager.

They had a nice selection of Matthews flour in my local Aldi this morning.

It's nice flour, esp. the Cotswold Crunch. I recently bought some via Amazon as I hadn't seen it in Aldi for a while, and what do they do ...? :)

Has anyone tried the mince pie ice cream? I’m still in 2 minds about it. It’s not got much of a taste

So easy to make your own. Jar of mince meat, heated slightly to make it more runny. 1 litre tub of vanilla ice cream. Allow ice cream to soften a bit, then mix both together and re-freeze. Easy and delicious!

When I had it there was also pastry in it.

Anyone know if Aldi has discontinued their Fletchers fine ruby Port?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,673 ✭✭✭Feisar

They have a bacon/ham/gammon off cuts thingy. It's a kilo of meat for €1.99. OK I'm not going to present it on Xmas day with the turkey but for sambos it's great

First they came for the socialists...

Picked it up yesterday. Just made a loaf looks good. Meant to be for the morning and school lunch but I might have to have a slice with some of aldi's chicken liver parfait in a bit!
