Aldi... what do you recommend?

I really didn't like the loaded fries they had, thought them rather overpriced meh food & meh chips. Wasn't expecting anything brilliant & was still disappointed.
Glad to see the little tins of flavoured tuna are back, though a poor replica of before. They used to have loads of juice/sauce in them but are very dry now, like the John West infusions tins.

Can recommend the Goan Vindaloo sauce in a jar with spices on top. I fried off some onions, garlic, chillis, tomato paste with the spices and then set that aside before browning some chicken and adding the onion mixture again along with the vindaloo sauce. It is not an exact replica of vindaloo but it is very close and has a nice deep rich flavour to it. Thought I might have gone over the top by adding chillis to it but it was grand, not too hot at all. I found it in the middle aisle nearest the tills a couple of weeks back so it might be end of line, if I can find some jars there tomorrow I'll be stocking up.

The saag is really really good too M.

I have a few jars of the vindaloo in the press, haven't gotten round to sampling them yet, but if they're as good as the saag (which I stocked up on) I'll be looking forward to devouring one over the weekend.

The sourdough pizza mozzarella and basil are top notch. One of the nicest shop bought frozen pizza's I've ever had and I generally don't eat pizza without meat!

I tried the sourdough chicken and chorizo and love it!
It's not exactly cheap at 1.99, but one of the best shop bought ones around. I must try the one you mention.

Oddly enough, I thought this pizza was nicer than the dearer range in the refrigerator area. I found those bases not great and overall just not as tasty.

The 29c west cork yoghurts are incredible for that price, great flavours in them too, miss the panna cotta one, anyone see that?

Is the Saag a curry jar with spices on top or what? I love saag paneer so would be interested in making some as a side dish.

The strawberry panna cotta seems to be missing but the rhubarb is back and I think it's better than the last I had. Less bitter maybe.

I picked up the Moser Roth giant ostrich Easter egg this morning, the bloody thing melted in the car after 2 hours and was a big pile of gloop when I got home. Couldn't give it to anyone so cracked a bit off and tasted it. It really isn't nice, not much taste off it and I like white chocolate. Maybe the heat affected the flavour?
It looks gorgeous tho, especially the way it's packaged. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Sorry but can’t helping laughing at that :D

On a serious note, how hot was it in the car? Melting point of chocolate is around 30c

I couldn't stop laughing myself, it was for my 9yo and it was the only egg he asked for lol.
I had to go back to work for about 90mins and I'm about 25 mins from home so it was roughly 2 hours. The car was in the shade and I'd the front 2 windows left open a little but it was in the sun when I came back. It did cross my mind that it could be warm but didn't think it was that warm.
Either way, the chocolate was horrible. Doubt the heat would have affected the taste too much.

    So popped into aldi today, 3 things to report;

    - The Animus Douro wine which disappeared a few months ago is back, but is now just Animus.... so probably different/possibly not as good, but I bought a bottle anyway and will report back once I've tried it. Still €7.65 anyways.
    - Got a very cute mothers day card for 99c - bargain. Feels good quality and doesn't come across as a cheep card.
    - Bought the Oats and Honey serum thats on special buy for €4.95. I saw The Beautiful Truth rave about this on her instastories about a week ago and said I'd give it a go as I've never tried their skincare. Not expecting it to work wonders but even if its just a nice, soothing product to use when my skin feels a bit dry I'll be happy enough. It also comes in a neat 30ml bottle so will be handy to bring with me when traveling with hand luggage.

    So, in short;

The serum is absolutely dire - not a fan at all. Didn't feel comfortable on my skin and flaked off the next morning.
Card - very good, looked good and did the job.
Wine - also good - its been that long since I had the original so I can't remember exactly what it tasted like (other than I really liked it) but I enjoyed this very much and will buy again.

Picked up the new (to me anyway) ready meal low/fat/sugar/salt chili con carne for lunch today and it was delicious. Was in a red and white sleeve in the ready meal/chilled section. Think there was also a piri piri chicken meal too. 3.50 or thereabouts.

Piri piri wasn't great I found, chilli con carne was definitely the better of the two.
Very handy to have in the fridge if your stuck and €3.50 is reasonable.

The Chile Con Carne is great when you're feeling lazy, I spice it up with a load of chili flakes and pour it over some veg though, it would be a bit boring with the rice straight out of the packet.

Tried three of those when I didn't want to feel too guilty of ready meals.

The chicken one is very dry, couldn't finish it. Chilli is grand, there are "taco fries" which was made of minced turkey and sweet potato fries.

Wouldn't even be similar to taco fries, but OK taste wise. They lack of seasoning, but I guess they wanted to keep it healthy enough so salt was spared.

Chilli definitely the best of the three I've tried. Probably the easiest to get it right tbh.

Not sure if there are more. Wouldn't mind something from Indian or Chinese cuisine added to this range.

Their regular Jalfrezi and Tikka Masala were not too bad for a ready meal, but the chicken in them puts me off a little. The texture and taste is a bit plastic (I know it's ready meal so can't expect too much tbh).

Someone recommended those Soulful dishes in the small plastic tubs recently - I tried the thai curry one and it is gorgeous. Perfect for a work lunch on a cold day and suitable for Vegans (I'm not vegan but aldi seem to really be stepping up their vegan friendly offerings so this may be helpful to someone).

I tried the small can (250ml, 5%) of pre-mixed Clontarf whiskey & ginger as it has been reduced to €1 in my local ALDI and it was party friendly size.
It's 'fiery' ginger i.e. jamaica rather than canada style, think it would work better with rum and lime than whiskey.

I must try the cola sometime.

This stuff is a near perfect imitation of what you get in a tub from a chipper:

In the specials at the minute but they sell it in Dealz aswell, fecking lovely.

Mmm never picked one up, but my wife and the eldest lad are demons for chipper "garlic sauce", so will definitely grab one tomorrow to try and quell their appetite for it. :D

I have however bought the yoghurt/mint one and it's as good as anything the local Indian gives me in their tubs.

I've been on the look out for chipper-style garlic sauce for a good while and this stuff is close to perfect. Just bought two bottles in Aldi :D

Got the salt & chilli wings from freezer (The also do barbecue ). Very very nice. Plenty salt , plenty chilli. Lovely in the air fryer. Better than any I've ever had from takeaway. Likewise their salted chilli ribs are top notch !

The circular cheese melts for on top of burgers are great, there are a few offerings. I can't take crdit a poster on the burger thread mentioned them.

A poster above said the rib eyes, they are brill.

If yer into fillet sometimes they are packaged and sold as sirloin so yer winning at the till with that one.

The free range chicken fillets are very good, make nice chick fillet burgers.

I don't get the bad press the fruit and veg get however I'd use mine up pretty quickly.

I don't rate their hams as in the ones you roast/boil yourself. Never had a nice one. My mum always gets her meat/veg in the butcher/veg shop. Most things are comparably OK in Aldi. In terms of quality vs cost, however the hams are shiote!

I have had the hams that you boil yourself, thought they were lovely, there was a smoked one I had before was really nice but the last ham I got was lots of fat in it so that wasn’t great.

I can also vouch for the barbecue flavoured ribs, my lot love them and I buy them once a week.
I bought the rhubarb today and I've just stewed it, tastes gorgeous. We also prefer Aldi weetabix, the Kilkelly butter (the Gold version), like their salted/roasted peanuts, also buy the luxury loo rolls, the clothes washing conditioner is as good as the more expensive ones imo.
