Off Topic but I see Aldi are giving staff a 10% pay increase while this goes on.
They are cleaning up at the moment but so is every other shop and supermarket but Aldi are the only one I've heard of doing it.
    Hopefully the rest will follow.

Tesco surprisingly did it first two days ago!

Tesco announced similar recently, backdated to close to the beginning of March. They've also changed their payment terms with their suppliers so invoices will be processed within 5 days rather than 14.

I hadn't heard about Tesco so fair play also, more so if they were the first to do it. Hopefully the rest follow suit, especially the local shops like Centra, Spar etc.

Can't say I'm too happy with the measures taken place in Aldi though.
On the other hand, my local SuperValu was limiting people in, had wipes, spray etc... and marks in the floor for distancing.

Tried the bake in the bag pork steak about a fiver and a good portion for 3. Juicy, tender and flavourful. Cooked some chopped onions, mushroom, tenderstem brocolli and green beans in a cream and wine sauce. Plates licked all round!

My local Aldi had a table at the entrance with spray for cleaning basket and trolly handles, and have the floor marked out for 2m distance while you’re queuing. Was very impressed.

I thought the exact same in my local Aldi compared to SuperValu. The aisles in Aldi just aren't wide enough to be able to physically distance yourself from the other shoppers, and they weren't checking how many people were in the shop. I won't be going back to Aldi while all this is still going on.

Lucan supervalu are on top of their game. Aldi in belgard is very good also. Let 10 people a time in.

I'm in the same boat. Was very irritated by it last weekend, kept having to back down aisles away from people. No sanitising station at the door. I love Aldi but it looks like it'll be another supermarket for me at the moment.

I've been avoiding our local Aldi too in recent weeks in preference for a Lidl a bit further away. Reason being the Aldi is quite small and cramped in places with lots of pinch points even during "normal" times where people bunch up and congregate. The Lidl store is much bigger and roomier. so easier to keep your distance.

Our brand new Aldi is huge and has very wide aisles, so it's a pleasure to shop in. And with the numbers of shoppers being limited at the minute it's brilliant. They have paper towels and antibacterial sprays on the way in, and all the checkouts have plexi glass shields.

Walls Honest Chips, as close as one can get to the real thing from an oven chip I'd say.

Used them for our homemade spice bags last night (served up in brown paper bags), kitchen smelled like a chipper with them in the acti fry.

First they came for the socialists...

Agree 100%, have had them a couple of times now, bleeding lovely so they are :D TBH, I prefer them to chipper chips now

Think I saw them on the shelves a few months ago, am I right to say that they are 3.50? I remember thinking that you'd actually save money by going to the chipper!

My first thought aswell. Twice as many from the chipper for that money, and chipper chips are amazing a day later reheated in the airfryer if you only get through half.

My local Chinese has a medium bag of the nicest chips in the country for €1.50, thats my go-to now, dont even bother trying to do chips in the airfryer now.

Herself came home with them so I don’t know how much they were however the one bag was barely enough between us

Yeah thought I saw them marked as 3.50, it just surprised me to see something in a supermarket dearer that you'd get it elsewhere. Not the exact same product I know but in the same category.

Aldi have generally been creeping up their prices on items like this, I just noticed last week that their seafood chowder is 3.29 whereas in Tesco a near equivalent product is 2.79. Kinda surprised me as I was always of the thinking that Aldi beats Tesco for value across the board on similar products but thats no longer necessarily the case. Their meat super six has gone down hill too, its rare I get anything from it now compared to a year or so ago.

The chowder has always been that price iirc, I normally love the Cully & Sully chowder which is priced the same as the rest of their range in SV but Aldi chowder at 3.29 v Aldi chicken and veg at 1.49 ! Even the specialty selected Mexican bean, Tuscan lentils etc are only 1.79

These chips are a rip off and I remember saying that months ago when they were introduced.

I don't even understand why would anyone pay 3.50 for these at all. Even if they were cooked already.

Yeah its a bit mad, Im not sure how they justify the price compared to other soups. A bit of a premium for sure, but more than double price is excessive imo. Their chowder doesnt exactly have lots of fish in it either, its more so a soup made with fish stock than a proper chowder

Yeah, bit mad but I suppose some people dont mind paying for convenience, and you definitely do pay handsomely for it!

On that note I took a look at the label for the smokey bacon pieces talked about further up the thread. The packet is only 50 grams with the price at 1.99. On a per kilo basis the price label said a kilo of the stuff is 39.80  Right across from it you've got streaky smoked bacon in 250g packs for 99c, or 3.96 a kilo. That is some price differential between a cooked and a raw product, the cooked is basically 10 times the price per kilo than the raw. Mad stuff altogether.

Aldi are definitely gouging now on prices. Shop today came to €129 excluding wine, a lot of variety is gone there’s basically just one type of each product. I had to go Lidl on way home to get basics like peppers.
Plus no hand sanitiser, no Perspex screens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,682 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

Yeah Im surprised that they still havent got perspex screens, Dunnes and Supervalue have had them at least two weeks now, Aldi have been poor in comparison which surprises me somewhat

    Amazes me too
I’ve had to stop going to my local one and have switched time tesco
    No screens
    Not enough space
    No sanitizer
    No limits on entry

Tesco is restricting to one in one out and is much wider
It was quite a relaxing shop the last day !!!!!

In fairness my Aldi were doing one in one out, had lots of marking on the ground for 2m distances, were wiping down the cashier area before and after each customer.

They definitely had a lot of complaints anyway going by the replies to this tweet

Why no screens though? Every other shop I go to has them, big or small, chain or independent, its a sheet of plastic and a few screws or nuts and bolts.

The one in Limerick (Dublin Road) had no precautions in place when I was last in there about 10 days ago... Although that may have changed since. Has anyone visited any of the Limerick stores in recent days?
