Has anyone seen a Portuguese red wine called Gym Dao lately? It was one of my favourites but I've not seen it in a while in any of the local Aldi stores that I frequent (Frascatti, Sallynoggin, Sandyford)

Was nice alright but its vanished like all the nice wines they had last year. They had nice pinot, chianti, bouches du rhone, malbec but they're wine section has gone to total sh1t now unfortunately and I havent been there in months as a result.

The spicy chicken wings in garlic, chilli and black pepper have become a staple in our house. I'd normally cook them for longer than they say, I prefer them really crisped up.

mmmm, sounds good. I dont think Ive seen these before. Are they chilled or frozen?

I think they're better than the real thing. The biscuit is softer but has a much nicer flavour.

the real thing has got worse over the years.

Did any supermarket ever copy the brunch? you see loads of cornetto knocks offs, and magnum, but I never saw brunch. I think I saw a knock off "feast" before.

I got the millionaires shortbread aldi ice cream tub, it was only OK, would not bother again. I sometimes just crumble up biscuits and put it in ice cream, I prefer when they are not frozen.

I beg to differ. Have enjoyed a number of different reds and whites this spring at really fair prices.

Chilled, with all the other fresh chicken products. They also have them in peri peri, but I just prefer the other ones, handy for a makeshift BBQ with some baked pots, ribs and some corn on the cob..

Yeah, it was not that spicy, you did get the salt & chilli, and they have another shredded chicken which was not. They also had chicken balls, regular and I think curry flavour.

That kebab thing might be making a return, if its the one you are talking about.

Aldi bows to customer demand to bring back £4.99 item shoppers say is 'better than Nando's'

I think I saw it listed before but it seemed quite pricey per kilo.

Probably not out as it seems to be tagged as BBQ and so is seasonal.

Yeah thats the kebab thing i was on about. I didnt know it had a fan club in the UK, had it once before and it is pretty decent though so hope it shows up in the freezers soon.

Would tend to agree. Whilst I think the range has become somewhat less extensive than it was, value wise I don't think any of their wines can be beaten, and the likes of Toro Loco and most of their Exquisite Collection stand well against any other supermarket equivalents.

Toro Loco is great value, and they recently introduced an organic version for a near identical price.

Cote du Rhone Villages is a regular purchase.

I got an Alsace Riesling this week which went down very well with the warm weather.

Nice to see someone else shares this opinion. I had some last week with pork chops, and kept thinking everytime I chomped on a sausage that it was very salty.

I think some light sourcream dip would benefit these.

I think they might be gone or at least I havent seen them in a while. Lidl did the same with their frozen half leg of NZ lamb

Would you not just buy fresh lamb instead

Depends what you're after and your budget etc.

The frozen chops are/were serious value for money relative to fresh lamb which is obviously better.

I love having a few bags of the frozen chops in the freezer as a quick option for lunch. Under the grill with a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper for 20 minutes and happy days. Not bad for €4 or so. You won't get too many fresh lamb chops for €4.

Was there meat on them? I always assumed they'd be mostly bone, the rejects from the production line...

Yes, plenty for one person that's for sure. They're obviously mass produced and cut by machines so not at all pretty and there can be one or two that are more bone than meat but the converse is also true which is nice to find.

I wouldn't be buying then for a dinner party or to impress anyone but for the price of a sandwich they are super value.

I bought those lamb chops mainly in winter and they were serious value for money. NZ lamb is pretty tasty too. It was the same with Lidls half leg of lamb from NZ when they did it, had many a Sunday roast with that and it was a bargain at 7.70 with enough to feed three people

God, I just wouldn’t trust anything for sales at that price. There has to be something wrong with the way it’s produced or the general quality, poor conditions and food for the animal.
I buy organic as much as I can anyway and only from reliable sources.
Bargains are great in other areas but not in food, too dangerous.

I don't know if your serious or on a wind up?
What if your organic leg of lamb was on offer and had €4 off a kg? Would you leave it behind because it makes it dangerous?

    Is that you, Mum?
Especially bad if from one of the German retailers, right?

Makes sense for consumers with price I guess. Personally not for me as I'd be thinking about how bizarre buying lamb from NZ was, when there's local stuff, perhaps a bit dearer, but with much lower food miles/carbon footprint. I am from farming stock too, so it's probably something that's more to the forefront in my grocery shop, esp with meat.
If you do eat a lot of lamb though, it's much cheaper to get a half or whole lamb for the freezer than buying a leg/chops here & there.

Don't want to take the thread off topic so thanks for the reply :)

why must it be something "wrong", it could be some cheaper method of production. Most foods are far cheaper to transport and store frozen, for the shop there is less risk of spoilage or having to sell stuff off cheap as its near its use by date. All these must be factored in.

If Aldi had the exact same meat and decided to freeze some and sell some fresh than after factoring in all the costs & risks then the fresh one might have to be priced 50% higher to make the exact same profit.

Also the margins can vary wildly, stuff can be sold at a loss, or cheaply produced stuff can have a massive price attached. I see this a lot with tesco "finest" range stuff, there is obviously very high margins on some stuff as when you read the ingredients there is nothing special about them that justifies such a high price.

Some stuff is a marketing gimmick, like those giant tomahawk steaks that get media attention but most are sold off half price in the end.

I got a leg of frozen lamb in lidl and was amazed at the price. I wish more frozen meat was available, like deboned skin on chicken.

Where can I find tomahawk steaks at half price?! And how much is a frozen leg of lamb in Lidl these days? I know if you go to Lidl on a Monday theres a good chance of picking up fresh meat for 33% or 50% discount, have got fresh lamb, rib roasts, full ducks that way in the past. My own Aldi doesnt seem to ever discount meat in that way, I wonder what they do with it when its short dated.

Agree that the frozen NZ lamb is great value for money. I wish they would freeze Irish lamb if it meant the price coming down. Though their lamb leg steaks on the Super 6 at 4 euro are good value when they show up.
