    Hi,

we (plus 1 year old son and dog) are going to come to Ireland in August (currently we live in Germany). The cities of choice would be Galway, Dundalk, Cork or Waterford. Living up to 50km outside the city would be no problem.

Are the chances to get a letting really that bad?

No, you'll be fine in those areas.

    Check www.daft.ie for property's

Getting a house that will accept a dog (and it will need to be a house as 99% of apartments ban them) will be a little difficult. Of the places you list, Galway has the least available accommodation, followed by Cork but that you are willing to live outside the city will make things a little easier.

The problem is mostly in the Dublin area, so you will be fine.

The problem is everywhere unless you are happy to commute. If you aren't too fussy you should be fine. I live in a very large country town near Cork and its impossible to get anything to rent and prices are high....

Know people currently looking in Galway, prices are ridiculous, deposits required can be high. Outside of Galway there are plenty rentals to be had but the roads are not great for distance commuting. No dual carriageways and plenty tractors. The dog will limit you badly.

Friend was asked for a €2500 deposit on a 2 bed house. Tiny 1 bed apartment costing €750pm. Crazy days.

    Yeah, just pick Dublin.

Keep in mind that once you get so far away from Dublin, public transport (esp trains) costs jump, and the availability of said services plummet.

    Really? Puplic transport sucks?

Having a dog will mean you will be very limited landlords don't like dogs

There is a very high demand for rental properties in Dundalk at the moment. Workers in companies like National Pen and PayPal/EBay have used up much of the available rental market. Although both of these companies would offer employment opportunities for German speakers.

Like another poster said Daft and Myhome.ie are your best bets for keeping tabs on what is available to rent.

Commuting options from Dundalk to Dublin are good, you can get train, or Matthews Coaches offer a good and much cheaper commuting option,
    Best of luck.

Landlords don't like dogs here. It really limits your options.

What do you suggest to raise our chances to get a desireable letting? What references would suuport this process? I own a flat in Germany and pay my mortgage always in time.

People own property in Germany, we've been told you all rent?

You could start off with airbandb.com and get yourself sorted out for a month in your desired area. While you are there look for longer term accommodation. Have your passport and bank account details and a couple of utility bills from your own home. You might get away with 1 month deposit and the first months rent in advance but a larger deposit would help you.

    Renting is widely spread here.

    With a dog? No chance!

The dog can stay at home while I will be searching for a new home for us. Academic year starts in September and mid August we want to move. But a month will not be an option. Rather 2 or 3 days. So I will have to arrange appointments in advance. But airbandb.com seems to be great. Much less expensive than hotels.
