Not aware of any process here in UCD for that, but in Trinity if you complete a Dentistry degree then you can apply to enter directly into 3rd year medicine. It's 8 years in total. Spaces are very limited though as there's very few spaces for this route. You'd be better off doing a 4 year degree and then sitting the GAMSAT for graduate entry which would be easier

Thanks! Do many do general science and then transfer into Graduate Med?

Hey all can someone explain to me how most people get into Medicine via Dentistry. Apparently it's really common but I don't quite understand it.

Im not 100% sure but I think those Dent students that "transfer" into Medicine are only allowed specialise in Maxillofacial Surgery, a specialty where Dentistry skills are needed.

As I said I'm not certain but I've heard it many times.

Apparently you need both a medical degree and a dentistry degree to do maxfax

General Science would be the largest group in graduate medicine. If you're thinking about solely doing a degree to get into Grad Med then I know of people who have done the 3-year science degree in UCD, which cuts down the entire process to 7 years (which is just 1 year more than the 6 year course in UCD that most do). The science modules also set you up for the science section on the GAMSAT

There's no advanced entry to Medicine for dental students. Advanced entry is only available to graduates who have also completed their post-grad MFDS examinations (So you cannot apply for advanced entry straight after you graduate).

What is the name of the course in UCD that allows you to jump over to graduate medicine? Do you still have to sit HPAT/GAMSAT before you enter graduate medicine through this course?

There's no such course. Graduate medicine is open to anybody who holds a 2.1 degree from any course and then achieves the sufficient score in the GAMSAT

So a 3 year general science course in UCD is sufficient with the GAMSAT? What was the name of the 3 year course you were referring to above?

I was referring to general science in UCD which you can do in 3 years

Applications for med have gone down by nearly 1 percent, and I'm guessing might go down a bit more after HPAT results. Do you think there will be a drop in points or is the drop in applications to small to affect...

Does anyone know about the rules of repeating the Hpat or can this be done?

If I were to get enough points in the leaving cert but miss out in the Hpat could I repeat the Hpat the following February after my leaving cert and combine the better points then?

Or is it that you only get one chance at the Hpat ever?

That's exactly what i'm doing this year! However with the points changes supposed to occur next year, I have no idea if it can be done next year!

Are the mature results being released this week??!

  • Registered Users Posts: 16 EllenDempsey

They were released about a week ago! From what I was reading on their thread a lot of them seem to be disappointed with their HPAT results. Most seem to be saying their HPAT dropped in points since last year.

Oh dear, looks like Grad entry for me then. *sighs*

Interesting that we didn't hear about it. Does that mean they're corrected but just being witheld?

Well all they have to do is scan the answer sheets, so it doesn't take that long! And I doubt they separate the answer sheets up.....it's extremely annoying!!

Just had a look through that thread and their scores are surprisingly low, does that mean they could be decreasing across the board?

Could anyone send me a link to that thread where the mature results are being discussed? Please? :)

Someone just posted on the mature page that they got a score of 168 and this translated to the 73rd percentile, pretty sure this is almost exactly the same as last year so points shouldn't change much

I plan to do the HPAT in 2017, is there any other helpful materials besides the mock exams from acer? Thanks and good luck with the results next month! :)

The Acer mock papers are an awful representation of the real exam, anyone who went in thinking that they represented it had a harsh wakeup call unfortunately, but mEd entry is very expensive and it's a hard thing throwing 400 euro or so at them. I did mEd entry and found it useful, maybe more because of knowing what to expect, than actually improving. They incorporate acer questions from the Australian version of the hpat into their preparation which really does give you an Idea.

Definitely don't go buying acer exam papers though because you get a free one when you apply for the hpat and you can make your own judgement then on whether they're worth the money.

Also don't stress about it now, it's a long way off the be worrying about it.

you guys are insane doing the HPAT and the LC simultaneously. Mad respect for you aspiring doctors. I imagine you guys are aiming for the high 500's/600's as well points wise. Is the pressure getting to any of you? I'm not doing medicine but I need high points unfortunately.

Which paper does acer give you for free when you pay the HPAT fee? I've registered and I'm looking at their online store, but don't want to buy an exam paper and end up getting that one free in November.

Pretty sure it's the first one you get for free, I had made the mistake of buying this one -.-
