Would anyone know if many people that are elegible for HEAR apply for medicine? I know there are already some threads about this but most are out-dated.
Basically I got 150 in the HPAT, I'm so downhearted and really really disappointed with it and feel like I'll be about 20 points off ( give or take a few) What are the chances I could get it with HEAR or should I completely scrap the idea? 😭 It's literally the only bit of hope I have.
This summer is going to be absolutely awful with stress and worry! I know this sounds stupid but I can't really imagine doing anything else in college 😬

Does anyone know the minimum percentile that got a place in medicine last year? (I know you have to count in LC points but just to give me a rough idea!)

Even with HEAR you would be still a good bit off the mark from what Ive seen in my year. Just repeat the HPAT..in 2014 I got 150 but repeated in 2015 and got 191 so it is definitely worth a shot.

Congrats to those who are happy! And to those who aren't, it isnt then end of the world even though it may feel like it, you can always give it another attempt!

Ok thanks for reply! Did you take a year out or did you do science or something for the year? And also did you spend much time studying for the HPAT or do any specific prep courses?
I felt like the more I studied for it the worse I got at it 😬

I am a mum too, and I know how stressful this process is ....

Sorry dont have any real tangible advice, but hang on in there and jolly him along (easier said than done I know)

As I keep saying to my boy 'everything happens for a reason', though In know its little consolation when they have their mind set on something. :(

If I were you I would take a year out and repeat the HPAT. You won't have to pay repeat fees and you can concentrate on the HPAT (if you get a good Leaving Cert.). You could work as well or volunteer.
What percentile is that? I know it's upsetting and that you'll be worried for the rest of the summer but I would try to relax about it. One year will not make a difference in the grand scheme of things. Most people in my year (medicine) did a year of college first or took a year out. You'll have a year to mature and be fully ready for college.
I can't say whether you'll get it or not but I would prepare yourself for not getting in. Put some backups down, even if you don't think you'll take them. Also, try talk to others who are currently doing medicine (if you know of people in different colleges I'd try contact them), they might have some advice.
Good luck, I hope it works out for you!

Sorry to hear that. The only thing you can really to is be there to console them. Make sure they put backups down that they would be happy doing if they are set on going to college this year. Also consider taking a year out to repeat the HPAT. Or, if they do a year of a different course, they can always repeat the HPAT during that. I wouldn't give up.

Thanks to all who posted or PM me with figures to make it easier to see whether points will change from last years.
Don't despair those who are disappointed. Please keep numbers coming. Maybe some repeats could give some of 2014 & 2015 figures we don't have

Yeah just about to ask that, my score added up is two off my overall...That's not even a rounding error anymore

did you take the weighting into account?
    Overall Score = [(2 x Section 1 + 2 x Section 2 + 1 x Section 3) ÷ 5] x 3

Could there be a point drop?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 Ryan97

Could there be a point drop?

Personally, I think that there will be a drop this year. The CAO released figures after it closed for the first time and it said that there was a 1.1% drop in applications. As a lot of people will be disappointed with their HPAT results this morning, there will be another drop today. As the CAO system is based on demand this means that the points should drop by at least 1.1%. I know that it doesn't sound like a lot but it could bring a lot of people, including myself over the line.

Does anyone know when you find out if you got accepted for the HEAR scheme?

At least a percent? Medicine is not gonna drop 7-8 points..more like a point or 2 if anything.
