    Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.

When he shot the swordsman in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the look of exasperation on his face was hilarious.

The oft-repeated legend is that Ford was feeling less than 100% in the tummy department on the day they shot that scene, so I'd imagine his look of tired boredom is genuine. Supposedly it was to be a big sequence originally, but circumstances forced Ford to ask Spielberg why he couldn't "just shoot the f-cker?" instead. Allegedly.

Anyways.. Roles people were born to play? Difficult to say, when people are well cast it's very hard to imagine anyone else inhabiting the character, but I'm sure there's some alternate universe out there where Tom Selleck is indeed Indiana Jones. We should just be thankful that we live in this one.

Maybe it's better to say such an actor brought a certain something to a role that no-one else could have, that it's almost impossible to imagine the part being played by someone else. One that springs to mind would be Bill Paxton as Hudson in Aliens. Someone else could have done it but who else could have portrayed all that empty confidence going to pieces, and in such a somehow sympathetic way. Try to imagine "Game Over Man -GAME OVER" with some other actors voice in your head. Difficult.

Was just about to say that. Also as Han Solo. cant picture anybody else playing both Han / Indy.

Tom Selleck almost played Indy and probably would have been great.

Oh & 'What about Bob?' - he was fab in it too :D

Richard Dreyfuss was perfect in that too.

Dr. Leo Marvin: You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone!
[Leo opens the door; there's Bob]
Bob Wiley: Is this some radical new therapy?
    Dr. Leo Marvin: YOU SEE?

    Bruce Willis as John McClane.

    Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley.

Both those roles had some bizzare first choices to play them. I think Stallone was originally going to play Axel Foley!

Although I think the part was written for Curry.

Joan Hickson as Miss Marple - even Agatha Christie, having seen a young Joan Hickson, declared that she was Marple

Lastly David Suchet as Hercule Poirot

Also Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute from The Office (US)

Some early audition tapes for the show are available on YouTube and no one else could quite capture the strangeness needed
